and looking at the PHB now, i guess i was mistaken about tieflings, they do seem to be half devil, but the book isn't clesr on that. it says "infernal" and they have a racial ability called "hellish rebuke
but i digressed, this is about gnomes.
the PHB says gnomes are jovial and friendly and love having fun and good food and drinks and making jokes and puns and playing pranks
and they are super curious , always looking for the next exciting thing as to never be bored and just enjoying life, every moment of it.
Ah, then allow me to clarify. Tieflings in 5th edition got a bit of a tweaking. Where as in previous editions, you could be descended from nearly any kind of Fiend, those of 5th edition are presumed to all hail from Devil stock.
The 'subraces' of Tieflings in 5th edition are associated with each of the nine arch devils who rule over Hell. Mephistopheles is the ruler of the 8th layer, and Zariel is the ruler of the 1st. With Asmodeus, of course, ruling over the 9th.
As of this current moment, only Zariel, Mephistopheles and Asmodeus Tieflings are playable, but we can expect to see the others added in by full release.
but then again, the PHB doesn't seem to make that distinction. they say "infernal"
I do know that humans are likely going to relate better to gnome than they would to a rat person.
dnd does have wererats and years ago, i played 2e and my character got infected with lycanthropy from a wererat and i was "Supposed" to start RPing as one, but then then group dissolved. . .
Because they don't have any imagination they copy everything else..
Infernal specifically refers to the denizens of Hell, and anything associated with the Nine Hells
Demons are classified as Abyssal, and originate from... well, the Abyss.
Tempted to make a Wildheart Barbarian, Forest Gnome.
Friend to all woodland critters, absolute menace to everything else.

My stats.
The +2 int really helps with early rolls
Maybe this is because BG3 is my first ever introduction to playing 5th edition's system, but just looking at the feats currently in game right now, I'm not that impressed.
All devils and demons are collectively referred to as Fiends. Devils specifically come from the Nine Hells and are more organized (they were based on the Lawful Evil alignment) and hierarchical. Demons come from the Abyss and were based on the Chaotic Evil alignment and are less hierarchical. They are also differentiated by the Blood War, an eternal war in which Demons and Devils have fought each other for millions of years. In some stories, the Hells are like forced labor for criminal prisoners, where celestials and mortals who have committed great acts of evil go to pay for their sins, by conscripted into the Blood War. The Abyss is where the truly irredeemable go. This would make the Nine Hells more like purgatory, for although wholly evil and a place of torment, it still represents a path to redemption through service in the Blood War.
The Nine Hells are ultimately ruled by Asmodeus alone (who has ascended to godhood, he is no longer merely an archdevil like he used to be, he is a full god now). Each of the Nine Hells are individually ruled by an Archdevil (such as Baalzebul), who are subject to none other than Asmodeus.
In the Abyss, sometimes powerful demons rise through sheer might to command other demons, or hordes of demons, through dominance. These are Demon Lords, and Demogorgon is one (sometimes thought to be the most powerful) of them. There are quite a few others, and even a former Archdevil turned Demon Lord (Grazt). Sometimes devils and demons switch sides, although it's almost always a devil defecting to the demons, not the other way around. The 'demogorgon' from Stranger Things is utterly unrelated, as Demogorgon in D&D is a unique character and there is only one of him.
And then there's the Obyriths, which don't get talked about often, and for good reason. They are possibly more terrifying than any devil or demon. Lore has it that they gave birth to all of the Fiends, that they themselves are from another dimension, one that was destroyed or corrupted (quite likely by them), that they are invaders, and their very presence corrupts any universe that they inhabit. The Obyriths harbor such lovelies as The Queen of Chaos, Pale Night (mother of all demons), and Obox-ob. The Obyrith are D&D's "Cthulhu Mythos" antagonists, amorphous, nebulous Elder Gods from another dimension and the Far Realm.
Tieflings are humans (because, apparently, only humans can crossbreed with other races in D&D) who have Fiendish ancestry somewhere in their past. It doesn't necessarily need to be their parents, but it could be. It just means that any of their ancestors bred with a Fiend, and that Fiend could have been a Devil or a Demon.
I have yet to see an Obyrith Tiefling, but I think it would be pretty interesting. Particularly a Pale Night Tiefling, who is my favorite Obyrith of all.
Just one of the main reasons why I've started falling in love with Pathfinder 2nd edition. The halfbreed races / ancestries are no longer confined to being half human anymore. You can, if you want to, have a Goblin Aasimar, a Gnome Tiefling, a Kobold Dhampir, an Orc Sylph, est.
The sub-races for Tieflings are also much cooler, in my opinion. You can be descended from Demons, Daemons, Devils, Rakshasa, Qlippoths and Velstrac.
