Hex is probably 'better' but only because you can use certain spells with it to proc several times at once. Sure, it also debuffs skill checks but that's not terribly useful most of the time. I always use STR debuff for shoves, I can't think of any other uses for the other options.

They can't be taken on the same class though, so the comparison is mostly moot. If you are a ranger, mark is your only option and if you're a warlock hex is your only option.

Guess you can pick hex on a ranger at level 4 if you really want to, haven't tried, but I'm not sure why I would.

I mean, it kinda depends on your class and build. Typically, you're only going to get Hunter's Mark if you're a Ranger, and only going to get Hex if you're a Warlock (there are other ways, however).

I tend to favor Hex a little more, if only because Hunter's Mark can be lost if someone else kills your Mark, but this doesn't happen for Hex.

Hex can also be stacked wit spells that hit multiple times, like Scorching Ray, so there's that.

Be a wizard cast them both... in Early Access

I like Hex over Hunters Mark
Hunter Mark overall is more niche.
Once wizard spell lists are restricted you will only be able to have one or the other spell unless you invest feats for additional spells.

For what it's worth though, I've never seen a scroll of hunters mark..don't think I've seen one for Hex either for that matter.

Not saying they don't exist, but without a scroll a Wizard can't take both and they'd have to use up their level 4 selection to take one or the other which doesn't really seem worth it to me but it could be an option.

Now that I'm looking, I don't think I've seen a scroll of Hunter's Mark or Hex either. Matter of fact, can we even Magic Initiate: Ranger?

I amend my statement. Sorcerer with eldritch blast and Hex :D

Magic Initiate: Warlock would be the way to get Hex, but the spell competes with Armor of Agathys for the first level spell slot. Sorcerers would be the best class until Bards arrive, picking the Magic Initiate: Warlock for Eldritch Blast and Hex because of the charisma casting.

No, the only classes available for Magic Initiate are: Bard, Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, Warlock, or Wizard. And Rangers take their spell list from the Druid list. The only classes who can get Hunter's Mark, are Ranger and Oath of Vengeance Paladin.
The only class who can get Hex is Warlock.

I think the only other class that could learn Hex might be Bard with Magical Secrets. I don't think Wizards can learn either, cause neither of them are on the Wizard Spell list.

(this is just from looking at the DDB's spell lists)

They both require concentration so you can only have 1 up at a time. Hex allows you to weaken enemy skill checks which marginally useful (but not really) and Hunter's Mark has tons of utility in PnP but not really in Computer Version. So minmaxing Hex is the superior choice however there isn't really enough of a difference between the two to warrant it being a choice.
