Warlock or Sorcerer for Lolth Sworn Drow?
I've being planning out one of the play through's I want to do on full release. I want to play a charisma caster for all the talkie stuff and spells, I'm also going to have high dex to use rapiers since I also get proficiency with my race choice and going with the soldier background and I plan on really role-playing into the soldier of Lolth part and making the everything I do be for or about Lolth as much as the game will let me.

My personal preference is to pick a warlock but I don't know what the more fitting lore option would be since I don't think Lolth would be my patron (which in my head she totally would be).

My question is which of the prime and sub classes make most sense and are most lore friendly with my role play?

Why not both?

The casting aspect for those two characters is very different. I personally prefer the sorcerer, but either of those choices should work well with your character concept. Even if you use a rapier it would be hard to see a scenario where you would want to use a melee attack over your spells and cantrips.

I like that you are creating a character based upon role-playing instead of some sort of meta gaming. It is too common for people to try to min-max their characters in D&D...especially in CRPGs.

Good luck!

My main reason for the rapier is the natural proficiency I get from being a Drow. I'm veiwing it more as part of my training as a soldier and a better melee weapon than a dagger to hold. I'll probably never use it as you say bit if I do need a melee attack it will be a better option over a dagger and pumping a few points into dex with the racial bonus of 2 means I wont be horrible at it if I do need it. And as I said it fits with the back story.

I know a little bit of the D&D lore and that Lolth sworn Drow are hand picked by Lolth herself and she gives them the red eyes to mark them as hers. I don't think the Eldritch sub class fits for having Lolth as my patron and I'm not sure feind is quite right either (If it was a game around a table it wouldn't matter as the DM can house rule your chosen patron but here I have to work in the constraints of the game they program).

I'm mainly looking for which is the most lore friendly of the options and will be least immersion breaking when I run into something that goes against what they games says.

In this kind of game I never min max, I'm solely here for the story and narrative. My favourite part is creating a character with their own backstory and motivations and personality, then picking what feels most natural for them to do in any given situation to see what happens.

WAAAAAY Back, Lolth was a demon lord. She seems to have since become a goddess, actually she was considered both, even way back. I think you can safely wing having a dual classed if you wanted. The rapier idea is good, but it is a touch close to the "Blade of Frontiers" which makes my teeth grind...

Overall, making a character you have fun with is the key. Lore wise if you plant your flag on Lolth, she is both a demon lord and a goddess so have a big time!
Peace

Personally, given the story we have so far, I love the idea of Lolth-sworn Drow Priestess so you can be at least somewhat heroically aligned while also being extremely selfish and evil, which is nice. I expect the later Acts to be absolutely terrible for Drow, so that'll be fun.

I would go Wild Magic Sorcerer if I were you. Lolth loves chaos after all, and hates Mystra.

Well, what kind of backstory do you want to roleplay?

I like playing a warlock llolth sworn drow because I can see him trying to escape, but in order to survive the journey he called upon a higher power and swore service to whatever else may be out there in order to escape, seeing that as preferable to being a slave to the matriarchy.

Or my drow could be a sorcerer, his natural abilities with magic raised him to some form of elevation men are allowed to have as magic casters in society, was on a mission when he got abducted.

I'm going to play a female. I'm picking the soldier background and that she was picked up by the Mindflayers while on a surface mission for Lolth

I’ve gone with a noble oathbreaker greater old one bladelock. It’s great at range and a menace in melee.

This feels like a character that should be a cleric more than a sorcerer. Or perhaps a Bladesinger, but alas that subclass is not in the game (without mods).
If you're looking for a melee soldiery class that slings spells to fit that motif, perhaps Eldritch Knight Fighter?

But if you want to stick with Charisma based gish class, then you're kind of stuck with Swords Bard and Warlock.

You can possibly RP an Old One warlock as being powers given to you by your head worm.

Honestly you can't go wrong with a Male Lolth-Sworn Drow Cleric. >:P

I wanted something where I'm getting my powers from Lolth as one of her agents, but cleric doesn't quite fit the vibe I'm going for, and I wanted to lean into the charisma bonus Drow get in the tabletop. If it was tabletop it would be easy for a DM to make the warlock patron Lolth but here you're confined to the games programming.

lore wise ... lloth is not a kindly deity, and is not fond of sharing her drow with other entities. I can't see her encouraging, or even allowing, a female to be a warlock at all, and a male would be iffy -- perhaps if she cut a deal with the entity, and you were her reward to it, but there would not be a lot of warlocks among the drow no matter how you slice it. She even still claims drizzit, though he rejects her, as one of her chosen, as an instrument of chaos to keep the drow society a little more exciting.

So you can say it happened, and make up a backstory for it, but ... yea... sharing drow with another being is a tough sell.

If you use warlock, for get rapiers and use the best weapon you can find as POTB.

Warlock implies you sold your soul to somebody other than Lolth, and that would get you executed in Drow society. Even among the ranks of the Dark Seldarine, you are expected to place Lolth above all other deities.

Sorcerer makes more sense, especially since Lolth-Sworn Drow are known to summon demons for the explicit purpose of breeding with them.
