magic items are much more scarce in 5e, a +1 item shouldnt even be gotten before level 5 according to them, also i think its a nice easteregg or something but its so easy to cheese the game that giving a massive reward for killing him feels kinda iffy.
You barely need to do anything as there is a mindflayer tanking and attacking hum as well, it'd be the easiest magic gear farm ever
I was going to try him next, I get 10XP for killing the mindflayer in that battle but it's random sometimes I get it other times I don't and out of like 10 times killing him haven't gotten anything as far as a drop.
I honestly think the problem here is that this is supposed to be a D&D game and people have come to expect to be able to do anything (No matter how insane) and the DM to have prepared / reward the unexpected. I have been doing edge case testing and I can for certain say this game does not account for every edge case of events and you can break it easily. Player rewards seem interesting and favor melee (At least from what I have gathered). It would be nice to receive rewards for edge case events, but I think it is early to assume that this won't change.
It's clearly not a edge case cos they made a voice line for mind flayer after you kill the commander so no Xp is clearly a bug... same goes for no XP after you kill the mind flayer.
i think a good loot drop here would be fine and would be in the spirit of BG 2 who wasn't to scared to be cool... after all it's single player
