Why is combat so hard?
Maybe its just me and I'm not very good but I've been waiting a while for this game and ain't going to give up. Here are the problems I'm having:

1. Nearly every fight I've had the attack hitting percentages are usually between 35% and 50%
meaning most attacks are misses. This even happens when a character start a turn right next to the enemy

2. When they attack they hardly miss

3. In the fight I am on now in the crypt 5 dead clerics come to life, each with double the hit points of two of my characters (Shadowheart and the wizard (cannot remember name)). Still point 1 still occurs

This is very early in the game

I know DOS2 combat was hard but this seems harder.

well i know as a ranger i have always 90-100% accuracy if i am further away from an upwards angle. so maybe angle is important

1. sounds about right, its based on DnD 5th rules, range matters very little its all your stats and 50% is fairly good hit chance for a level 1 (note the 50% really means rolling an 11-20 on a d20)

1. Did you build your character right? I have not seen below 75% for most of it

2. Sames as the above. Make sure you are using the correct armor

3. I did this at level 3 by not opening the door and coming in from the top entrance. Wizards have bad health and shadowheart is poorly built.

tl;dr
got the other way and level up first

Im having this issue as well. If i can get a proper set up, I win. If barely. Enemies at a comparable level for me either have the same amount of health or greater... and appear in groups of at least 4-6 or more. Not being able to hit anything... or doing half the damage enemies do is kinda killing this for me.

I would suggest to save frequently during your playthrough. The combat system takes some getting used to, but just like in D&D, you have to build your characters to be proficient in 1/2 things for them to be having high percentages to hit.

Having ranged characters keeping distance, but able to provide support to your front line melee types and making sure to use the terrain as both cover and damage (shoving off heights).

I've been getting through the combat by either going about the situation differently, or maybe trying stealth to give an advantage. For the fights I've lost, at least.

since they are using 5e ruleset there might be an angle issue or even a cover issue. Like if they are kinda near/behind a pillar there might be a disadvantage on hitting them

I found in building my character there was nothing much you could do. You couldn't change stats you are given and no reroll. My character is a ranger too.

I suppose I will have to do what I did in BG 1 and 2. Reload last save until the luck of the dice happens. Trouble is the load times are longer than BG 1 and 2.

If I can remember correctly, in the older BG games you could save in the middle of fights. I might be wrong though. Can this be done in BG3?

DnD itself has rather difficult combat, but you have a DM to play god and save your butt. Now, Larian is trying to figure out balancing numbers without god on your side. I understand it will be hard fights, but I think they will be balanced a little better in due time.

The combat is currently too hard. You have to save and reload so frequently it hurts the flow of the game.

Only once have i used a barrel, and that's to have fun with mage hand. I haven't had to actually savescum a fight yet.

You're underleveled and don't have a full party, That fight isn't easy as is.
TheNasky Oct 7, 2020 @ 7:11pm
the difficulty is pretty easy.

just make sure to build your character properly.

i cleared the game solo with my warlock, so im pretty sure once you learn how to play you'll have no problem.

Yeah 35% and 50% seems sus, mate. Then again, this is coming from a dude with 5e experience. Is 5e new to you? Be mindful that those undead take double damage from bludgeoning weapons :)

low level ..low skill

Idle curiosity; how'd you get through fights where you get grenaded a lot? Lots of potions?
