Baldur's Gate 3

Larian will turn BG3 into a comedy game like DOS
We all know the Baldur's Gate games have very dark story and theme. And compared to those classics Larian's DOS games are pure comedy. They don't have the talent to make dark theme games. Check out this list:

Not a single one of their games have a dark story and theme to them. Baldur's Gate 3 is screwed. I refuse to play BG3 if it turns into a comedy game like other Larian games.

Their games don't take themselves very seriously, that's partially true. But their games are also full of dark moments what are you talking about? They're often playing on constrast between dark and humor. Maybe aren't at the same level as BG most of the times but they try nonetheless.

Lets take the first DiDi. Where you enter some military encampment. Talk with couple of npcs and then mage shows up. He casts aoe mind spell and you must slaughter entire camp of innocents just to save your skin. Or go to some village which have entire plague district and all npcs there praise some doctor which is the only reason they are still alive. After some investigation turns out that the doctor is the cause of the "plague" and deliberately poisoning people. His last batch consists from three people and with all your effort you can acquire only two cures. Good luck deciding who dies.

Or lets take the last one which is funny circus from the start. In the world where many generations in the past Source was the answer to all of the problems now Source is denied. Because any its usage causes invasions of other plane creatures which slaughter everything on their wake. Everyone is paranoid and on top of hysteria. All who are under just a slight suspicion of ability to use Source are collared and brought by force to "Fort Joy" island for "cure" or murdered on spot in case of defiance. And this island is really full of joy. It is a lovely mix of prison, human experiment facility and survival camp. This your new home, enjoy.

Let's look at our options to get out of there:
- You can be drained of source. Which is basically your soul and self-consciousness. So after not a very pleasant procedure you are turned into the silent mostly mindless slave monstrosity.
- You can undergo lovely procedure where first your head is drilled. Then they plant some maggots inside your brain and seal them inside. Maggots will slowly be eating your brain from the inside causing immense sufferings and breaking your mind. To the point when almost nothing left of you and you will turn to very tough but unstable slave monstrosity.
- They can nail you down to the cross and pump you with source to such a degree than you literally tear every living creature near you to gibs just by you presence. After a long period of agony you will turn into very powerful slave monstrosity.
- You can apply for Kniles experiments and he is the man with very rich imagination. He has a fault though. Nobody survived in the process. At least not in one piece and presence of mind. There can also be a trend about slave monstrosity. Well, nobody's perfect.
- You can try to escape and most likely be killed by your wardens if you were lucky and they not just fastforwarded your ass to the first variants.
- Even in the case of successful escape good luck to survive. Your wardens controlling less than half of the island for a reason.
- Or you can just wait and do nothing until you will be "cured". But most likely you will just be killed by other unfortunates for some petty thing or beaten and starved to death in a cage for stealing an apple from the local gang.

Let's look at our possible companions:
- One is powder keg because she is literally possessed and can lose control any moment and go to full murderous frenzy.
- Other one is also doesn't feel very well, very broken in fact, because for the last years she was forced to live in a box, without any light and was tortured by her master. She was branded with magical slave scar and her will was not of her own. And the only time she saw a light were the moments when she was ordered to kill someone.
- The other one is immortal undead creature which have only one goal on his mind. Which is to find the reason why his immortal race was wiped out almost without a trace during his millennial imprisonment. He also have a funny hobby to rip off faces of other individuals to disguise himself from other primitive races which are now inhabit world which was his in the past. And they are only the constant source of annoyment. He could just wait off until everyone will be dead for just not be pressed to interact with them. But he doesn't have that much of a patience.
- The other one is self-centered prick and a fallen prince which very enjoyed to have intercourse with succubus for a long time and was eventually caught with pants off. Which resulted in obvious disgrace. Nobody likes to be ruled by someone who have something going on with demons. Especially not like that.
- The other one is in a business of mass killing, kidnapping and selling people. And just passing through here on a contract of murder. Even the name of his organisation could be the cause of wet pants on some knowing criminals.

But we survived and arrived to second act which is also a lovely place. Invasions are all over the place. Gigantic graveyard is controlled by necromancer which feeds on souls of the others in life and then in death. Island with elven mother tree is bombed with deathfog which anihilated almost every living being there. Currently inhabited by demons. Great deal of the map is shattered by earthquake and in ruins. You are literraly can only travel with teleporting spell there. In scarce scraps of peace we have taverns where cooks murder people, dismember them, cook them up and feed to unknowing customers. "Unsuspecting mouth is a best place to hide a body". But cook was wrong about that one. Because some of the customers are entirely knowing whats going on and keeping silent because are very happy about the situation. You see they are elves and elves there are cannibals which can have delicious memory dives during process of eating flesh of another individual.

And so on and so forth. But sure, not even a shred of darkness there. Just a comedy club non-stop. And the bad one at that.

But NoSFeRaTU I think some NPCs and party members told a joke or two and some side quests were funny. Thus the game is actually a comedy.
Absolutely. I agree completely ^_^

Pet pal quests are also hilarious:
- In one you need to find dog's mate and when you find her she is already was forced to eat human flesh for so long and was so abused that the only cause of action was to put her down.
- In another you need to find kindapped chicken egg which was stollen by invading creatures and so already possesed. So when you return an egg and it hatches chick will kill everyone there. And the quest is not finished there. You can proceed to deliver this chick to another murderous opportunity.
- In the third you encounter a cat which developed a habit to eat tainted fish because good fish is hard to find. And ask you to have some of that. You can grant his requests and then surprisingly cat dies. Disappointed a bit. Was expecting something more murderously funny.

What are you talking about? I played through the entire first chapter of DOS and there is nothing like you mentioned in the post. The entire chapter is pure comedy like fighting with laughing orcs on a beach, rescueing a talking head from a circus, investigating a wacky machine made by a druid, chasing after a talking and walking chest, etc.. all these kind of comedy stuff.

And the companions are also all comedy like a thief that only keeps laughing but does not talk, a barbarian that only talks comedy, an archer that wears dirty clothes and a mage that is half comedy and half serious.

After I saw the Disney characters in Diablo 3 I basically never got involved ever. also horrible writing, horrible plot, completely cheezy.

basically I just lost complete respect for anything you say neuronfly

DOS1 was supposed to be the way DOS1 was. Fable style.

I was talking about their first game which is Divine Divinity and the last one which is Divinity Original Sin 2. But let's talk about DOS1 if thats the only larian game you ever played. It is sure the much more light hearted experience. But it has its own share of darkness.

We are the source hunters and have a grant for murder everyone in our righteous crusade to purge the world from the Source. Also we are the very extreme case of amnesia as we were literally the guardians of the world. But we are neglected our responsibilities for selfish reasons in the past. And now the world is on the blink of literal destruction because void itself eating this plane. Because of us. But we all forgotten that. Very convinient.

The first scene which we're seeing on starting location is the corpse of a man that shoot himself from the cliff because some statue (imprisoned demon really) told him to do it. And later we'll find out he was far from alone in his venture to die in most ridiculous ways just for a cruel joke out of it. Then we encounter orc invasion at the last bastion of human kind in miles and help to fend them off. What was so laughy about that? Then we arrived in our first town to solve a murder case because some reports indicated that source users were involved. There are we encounter some mentioned by you quests like golem which was supposed to be a weapon of defence. But which had gone rogue and out of control to murderous rage until it didn't turned up in some cave in pursuit of killing. And people profiting on that disaster by sending hordes of clueless adventures to death until someone by pure luck will destroy the golem and they can snatch a reward. And Arhu is not a druid but a wizard which is also far from mere mortal. And he is the solely reason why this town is still standing and wasn't overrun by orcs and undead long ago. There are we encounter the girl who are working as assistant of a doctor which gives you a choice to decide who of her two patients will live and who will die because she isn't really care. And slightly after you annonced your decision you will learn that the one who survived is survived because hundred of other people died to infuse the stone which was used to heal him. And all that was just a experiment of power of blood stone in the field. You'll go to lighthouse and learn that some idiot in his jealousy which was even unfounded had deliberately let entire ship full of people crash on riffs to their deaths. Because he thought that woman on that ship was cheating on him. Have a wondrous opportunity to decide which is better. To kill defenceless charmed orcish female in cold blood or do nothing and let the charm spell over her to wear off so she'll obviosly kill that stupid soldier. Encounter cursed and irrevocably turned undead soldier whose only desire is that you'll deliver his farewell letter to his wife which says that he loved her and location of his money stash to help her to survive.

I think I'll stop there as it is another wall of text already. But yeah. Really pure comedy.

If you don't fancy it don't buy it!!! Quite simple really.
OP are you trolling or just ignorant?

Many game sequels change from the original game. Look at Witcher 1 and Witcher 2, Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2. DOS 2 is a lot darker than DOS 1, I didn't like DOS 1 very much, but loved DOS 2. So next time actually do research on something before you act like you know what you're talking about.

And on top of all the gameplay is pure ♥♥♥♥. They doesn't understand what made the first two Diablo games timeless classic. And how could they? They never did Diablo. Closed Blizzard North did. Path of Exile is way more spiritual successor to D1&2 than D3. And in every other department it is by a league better and continuing to constantly evolve. So much of an indie project started by a two people on their own vs nowaday Blizzard Activision Blizzard with their immense resources.

Sadly, D3 was awful. The one thing they did right was the incredibly smooth combat but even that was overshadowed by the flaws in items, characters etc.

Tried playing PoE for a while but just didn't get sucked into it.

Grim Dawn is my favorite and is closer to what D3 *should* have been in my opinion. Highly recommend Grim Dawn if you haven't played it.

As for BG3....I imagine it will be fine. Just cause they haven't done "darker" work doesn't mean they can't. I make my living selling BBQ but it doesn't mean I can't cook Pork Gyoza that would change your life.

I tried Grim Dawn in the past. But was immediately sidetracked by some other big game which is came out at the time. My first impressions of Grim Dawn were mixed. Combat feel a bit clunky. Starting locations are not varying much. But I seen some potential in it but never progress much in it though. Played for about 7 hours according to steam. Maybe I'll revisit it sometime in the future when I have some free time.

From another similar games I liked Titan Quest. It does have a zero replayability though. Loved Revenant despite of the game unfinished state. Loved Light Crusader on Sega, it was great. Played in Dungeon Siege (the first ones) they were fun at a time especially in multiplayer. As was the first Sacred.

BTW I never understand the amount of hate around BG: Dark Alliance spin-offs. It was pretty fun experience at hotseat with a friend. Short though.

Good stuff guys. Yeah a lot of this comes down to personal taste. To me at least as the story is interesting and the gameplay is good they got to screw up pretty hard on the tone/characetrs for me to stop playing what would otherwise be a good game.

Witcher 1 and 2 both are phenomenon, dragon age origins is a masterpiece, dragon age 2 is ok.

But DOS is pure comedy. It's world, setting, story and lore all are comedy.

I played Fable 1 many times many years ago because that game was a masterpiece. It was a legendary game with a very dark and gritty story and world. But DOS is pure comedy. Don't compare a comedy game like DOS to a legendary game like Fable.
