Propane tanks able to cause huge explosions.
Put propane tank at camp fire or oven.

Or shoot 'em like in Left 4 Dead or XCOM.

i am pretty sure they does. Heat inflation and gas inside of tank expands way faster than metal shell. Maybe someone must try it.

The idea being that if the tank ever is ruptured, there wouldn't be enough air infiltration to combust all the contents suddenly. It would only feed a flame for a few seconds around the rupture, and then pitter out.

So no, they don't blow up when you shoot them. Thats a movie trope.
Zombie are movie thing too.

Yet every single other part of the game is based on real life functionality. If you want propane tanks to explode as a makeshift trap and for cool effect its fine, but dont pretend its about realism

One post was enough, how empty was it though?

Well maybe they could simulate it so full propane tanks have more energy than empty, i think it pretty straight forward and linear calculation. Surely they have more energy than pipe bombs. Zomboid could even introduce makeshift pressure cooking bombs.

its the opposite, every type of fuel needs more oxidizer than combustible itself to explode, the emptier a propane is, just like a tank of fuel, the more likely it is to explode.
