Substations, Rolling Blackouts, & Power Management
fun minigame for players who learn how to crank out skills fast enough; add power substations to the game that hook up the area around them to the electrical grid, and pretend that the power plant went offline before the game started but the local area has an industrial molten salt energy bank or something just outside the play area that is what's keeping the power on.
players who can build their character's skills fast enough to do this before the power goes can get to a substation and turn it off forever in order to salvage parts from it, once they've gotten enough salvaged power station parts they can craft an item that lets them go to a still-powered substation and turn off the power for everything hooked to whatever bank of energy the region is drawing off of. after that the player can manually hit a substation in order to make it the substation on the network that is on (turns off the previous one) & in doing so extends the blackout date by a lot.
each substation would have a randomly selected skills-based requirement to get to it; one requires having the needed tools to dismantle an obstacle in the way, another requires carpentry to build a ladder to get to it, another has a crashed scaffold blocking it that you need metalworking to remove.

and on top of this, to make the system more stressful to try to work with, the game should also have rolling black-outs; the first time the power goes out isn't permanent, it'll come back on in a bit or after a while, & after that the power goes in and out intermittently before actually going out, so that players working their way towards trying to stabilize the power network have to guess whether or not they're too late
