Bitten? Whole game is almost over, so give us some other chance or hope to surive.
It'd be cool if you could amputate the head aswell. Of course you can't replace your head, but I mean, y'know, dismemberment. Might even be easier to do with the 3D models and animations on the way. Amputated or dismembered limbs could also attract zombies, maybe you could use this as bait, add it to a trap to attract more zombies, etc. Or maybe you could just go full on Terminus and live off of limbs.
I dunno how balancing would work, but zombie limbs would always make you sick, no doubt about that. Less horrifying suggestions aside, prosthetic limbs would be very interesting. You wouldn't bleed or get infected if your prosthetic gets scratched or bit, but every time it does, it gets damaged, and eventually it'll probably fall out.
Medical equipment being "needed" for an amputation I wouldn't really agree with, but it'd be much more likely for your patient to survive if you have the proper equipment. Backyard surgery with a butter knife and rags is the way to go!
Love it, be a good desperation move to try and save yourself. Could only get better with NPCs or multiplayer partners.
Even if not for zombie infection cure purposes, amputation is pretty realistic if an infected wound gets too bad and begins to gangrenate due cuts and bullet wounds.
I would love it too, to rely on self-amputation if no partner around and having a slim 20-30-40% (with first aid skill multiplicators to get better chances) chance of succeding.
You could use thread, ripped sheets or a combination of rag and a sturdy stick for a mundane tourniquet. Use anesthesia, beta blockers, pain killers and drink whiskey during the process; use the hammer/stone hammer to break the bone; a lot o dessinfectant to clean the wound; use the saw to remove the limb and cauterization with propane torch to stop bleeding and close the wound (It should be easier to do with Brave trait and harder/Impossible with Hemophiliac or Coward). Now, to keep well fed a lot of time, use plantain and sterilized bandages until full recovery.
A high skilled character with first aid in multiplayer with/without NPCs could use surgical tools such as surgical tourniquets; induce sleeping and numbness; pliers to clip slimmer bones (perone on legs); surgical saw for big bones; scalpel to clean cut skin and muscles; stitches on vessels to avoid bleeding and to close the wound with the skin flaps that wrap around the bone and extremity,no cauterization needed. A partner with high First Aid should yell better chances to make you stay alive.
I'm down with prosthetic limbs and/or the use of crutches, or nothing whatsoever on the amputated arms. Payer should be eligible for 2 amputations with heavy risk of dying on the second time. A 3rd one would be just insta-kill, or a crazy jeopardy between life and death. A 4th one, no way, too much chances of being alive after a third accident.
Health, carrying weight, speed, accuracy, aiming, strenght, agility, sprinting and moving inventory items around should all get hindered (depending on amputated limb), and also the time you need to build or dismantle stuff (if you lack a hand, you can't hold a saw on secondary slot, etc) and the two handed weapons, of course.
I'd be fine if amputation would or wouldn't save you from zombie infection (sorry, I know this was your point) but the pure concept sounds challenging and thrilling, it'd be a great objective for Doctors in roleplay, but no wonder it would be a huge amount of work and thinking if they ever decide to implement it at some point, considering the traits, consecuences and other conditions in the formula. Hope they really change their mind and add it.
Sorry about the long share of thoughts.
