Project Zomboid

Server settings file doesnt save when a mod is loaded B42.13
My mod list is fairly large, but I’ve tested this all the way down to single mods with only their required dependencies.

Here’s what’s happening:

When I go to Host, add a mod to the list, make sure the load order is correct, and hit accept, the Lua reload runs like normal. After it finishes, it sends me back to the initial Host screen (where you select or create a preset). It says my settings have been saved, but no .ini file is actually created in the Zomboid/Server folder.

If I check the folder, nothing was written.

What’s strange is:

Vanilla (no mods at all) works perfectly.

A small UI-only mod works fine.

The issue starts when enabling certain larger content mods that include script-heavy content (for example, vehicle-related mods), even when loading just one mod plus its required library. One might say its that vehicle mod. But that mod works for my friends in the same scenario just fine.

I’ve tested this on a completely fresh %UserProfile%\Zomboid folder.

I’ve deleted steamapps/workshop/content/108600 and let everything redownload.

Verified game files.

I have even completely reinstalled Zomboid 5 separate times.

I’m on the same Build 42 version as a friend who can run the same mod combinations without this issue.

Once it fails, even disabling the mod doesn’t always restore normal behavior. I have to delete the entire %UserProfile%\Zomboid folder before vanilla hosting works again.

It seems like something during the Lua reload phase is failing and aborting the preset write, but without any visible error in the UI.

Has anyone run into this on Build 42, particularly where Lua reload completes but server preset files aren’t actually written?

I might suggest reporting mod specific issues to the mod creators in this case.
That's the fun part it isn't mod specific, it does it with nearly every mod and even then sometimes vanilla. Only mods that don't cause lua to reload get through with out issue.

I did find a work around however. Loading mods in painfully small batches, 5 or so at a time manages to get it to go through and save the server settings. theres nothing in the logs each time and i generate no error popups either. I thought it might be my system setting the users zomboid file to read only but no.

I feel it might be an issue with lua being "overwhelmed" by the changes and failing to reload. I'm no a programmer or modder myself but given it works with the mods in small batches with suggest so.
I have the same problem did you fix it?
this is still happening to me and my gf. the only solution we found was manually entering mod ids in the ini and even then it was rlly a pain in the ass. hoping for an actual fullproof solution as opposed to just a workaround?
I had similar problems and ended up opening the Zomboid folder in Visual Studio Code and asking Codex to write a script to fix my problems with mods. I found several corrupt states and the script can fix some of them. Not the one you are describing but, you might be able to ask codex to change the script for windows or something (it is in bash, linux atm)
