Project Zomboid

Gog/steam crossplay
Hi,

I have friends interested in playing this together. I have little interest in buying this on Steam.

I don't see why this would be an issue, but I'm being told it is. Can someone explain please? Thanks.

GoG players cannot play on Steam servers and cannot use the Workshop integration, so mods need to be installed manually.

Steam players can play on GoG servers by using the -nosteam flag

Steam Library > Right click Project Zomboid > Properties > Set Launch Options > Type -nosteam > Start the game

That's really awkward sounding. Why can't GOG players join a Steam server, which is hosted by a random individual essentially? (Not steam providing it directly)

Thanks for the reply.

Because steam cannot verify that the client is a legitimate owner of the game.

Steam VAC

It is an option with Steam servers, among other things.

But that is in general no big deal as Steam players can easily join others servers.

You cannot join Steam servers as they have to verify the Steam ID and ownership of the game before allowing you to join, which GoG clients do not have.

They also connect to the Steam Workshop to check for any mods that the server has and auto-downloads them, which again the GoG client would not have access to.

I don't follow. Steam is not hosting the servers? Users host it?

Use nexus mods? It's really not that hard to unzip mods to a folder to match? Perhaps I'm thinking it is simpler than it is.
Sounds like the steam API is hooked to handle mod negotiation.

It's really tough to want to support this when it's effectively being gobbled in by the monopolistic stuff steam does.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, users host the servers and use the Steam API with it when they host a Steam server, as it requires that for the Steam Workshop integration.

I am not sure if what else I can suggest for your situation, since as mentioned at the first reply, you can opt out of the Steam API by just using the -nosteam flag. You can then install Nexus mods, connect to other non-steam servers and so on.

The extra features present in the Steam version do not take anything away from the GoG version.
