Random CTDs on build 41.68
Hey Hey!
Never had this issue before, even with loads of mods throwing errors all over the place (too lazy to filter them out as it didn't seem to be actually breaking anything :P)

Anyway, for some reason or another since updating to .68 I'm getting random CTDs, sometimes after 5 minutes, sometimes 30 minutes. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. I've tried a fresh install and a fresh save with no mods at all (just to check that mods weren't blowing up the engine or anything) but same results. My mod list has been checked and tidied for compatibility with no errors so I doubt that has any influence.

Been playing since the original Kate and Baldspot days and never had this happen so I'm genuinely a bit lost as to what it is?

Ran zomboid through the .bat so i could check the console after a crash as the logs weren't throwing anything up I could see (No stack traces, don't know much else tbh)

.Bat console dump:

Can you try going to C:\Users\YourUserName\Zomboid and delete everything there except the "Saves" folder? This should wipe your mods and any configs that might cause problems.
After that try loading into a NEW game and see if that crashes.

If it does, can you share the logs again?
Additionally, can you share the latest “hs_err_pid” file found in your main game folder “Steam\steamapps\common\ProjectZomboid”?
Again do this only if the game crashes modless and after wiping the configuration files.

Will do, I'll post back with results either way!

Got another one.
Cleared out users/zomboid (minus saves folder) and run a fresh vanilla game like you said and although it did seem to run longer at about an hour and a half it then CTD'd again.

Files zipped here:
https://dir.nu/625f34f4eacdf

Contains last console + logs
hs_err_pid files included, 1-4 are the last 4 created 1 being the newest & 5. is the first one i got when this started happening in March.
Latest hs_err i have is from yesterday, the crash I just got about 30 minutes ago didn't seem to generate one for some reason?

Thank you for the logs, the issue unfortunately isnt really clear in them though, it may either be a graphics specific issue or an issue related to Java.

For now, could you make sure to update your graphic drivers to the latest version? Since the logs show they are out of date by a few versions, the link to those should be here:

https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/drivers/results/187349/

I was hoping you wasn't going to say about updating drivers as the drivers I have are the latest ones that work well with VR. Newer ones absolutely kill the fps in VR and make games jittery as ♥♥♥♥ for some reason.
I'll give it a try though just so I can say whether that's the issue or not, if it crashes again hopefully it'll give me an updated hs_err to show for it.

I'll get back to you with how I get on, thank you for your diligence thus far!
P.S: Absolutely stoked for what you're doing with NPCs, sounds badass!

The alternative would be installing the latest OpenJDK Java version and then pointing the game to it, since it might be a specific Java bug, though the error isnt too clear on that unfortunately.

This is a good guide:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2441122190

Though instead of the OpenJDK9 you choose the latest version.

Hey hey!

Sorry to necro this post but been mad busy the past couple months so didn't get round to testing what you asked.

Updated clean drivers, wiped settings, started a fresh unmodded game and CTD'd again after about an hour or 2

Included logs, bat. dump, console and hs_err_pid (both a modded and unmodded so you can see if there's a difference. None of my mods throw errors in game)

Let me know what you think, I'm itching to get back into prepping for exploring Louiseville!

A link to said files would probably help (div xD):

Yeah still nothing specific I can suggest unfortunately. Could you also share the details of the crash from the Windows event viewer and reliability monitor? Sometimes there is extra useful info there if something external is causing the crashes which seems to be the case here.

I don't get it, Zomboid has been completely fine (even with mods throwing errors all over the shop) but since the multiplayer main update it's started doing this. Really weird
Twatticus Maximus Jun 25, 2022 @ 5:26pm
Nothing big in the background no, just a couple standard run of the mill tools like afterburner etc.
Vanilla tends to run for a bit longer than modded but not by much so it's likely not related

Shouldn't be, I updated it within the last month or 2.
Downloading the latest Nvidia release 516.40 now and giving it another clean install. Don't think it'll do much but I'll get back to you with results!
