Project Zomboid

Project Zomboid

leahmay1 2024 年 7 月 30 日 上午 7:02
game won't launch on Mac after working for months
I'm playing on a 2022 Macbook Pro M2 with 8g of memory, 170+ GB free with Zomboid downloaded. I know it says the game isn't playable on Mac M1 or M2, but I've been playing since March with no problems, and then all of a sudden yesterday it wouldn't play. It gets stuck at launch (from reading the error code I think it's officially hanging!). The app icon will go into my taskbar launching from Steam and bounce for a while before going still, and eventually clicking and holding will say 'Application not responding' and I can't even get it to open. I spent four hours on trying to fix this yesterday, and I've spent two today, nothing seems to be working. Any tips on how to resolve this would be appreciated!!! I want to play!!!
Here's what I've done to resolve so far off the top of my head:

Uninstall mods
Uninstall Zomboid
Update my mac
Try both launch options (compatability mode; project zomboid - used both with every fix I've tried)
Uninstall and update steam
Use an older Beta version
Verify game file integrity
Update other games (7 days to die was updating yesterday when I opened my laptop and it's not worked since then; could it be to do with this update or is this a coincidence?) and play them from Steam no problem
Tried to open from app icon, not through steam
Deleted all save files/settings and completely wiped all saved info
All the things people have recommended on google re console.txt/options.ini/lua

I can't think of anything else at the moment, but I feel like I've tried everything I can find on google, so if anyone has any other suggestions, I would really appreciate it. Otherwise I've heard people have used Parallels and that has worked but I don't have it at the moment, and paying for the game, a relatively new laptop and another system to play it on is less than ideal.

Any chance that you updated your OS prior to experience this issue?
With many games even those that are Mac supported, the most common issue was that they updated their OS.
(Not really a MAC person, but in various game forums i saw that after they updated to a newer version they were unable to run the game. And thus reverting to an earlier version helped.)

Can you share the Mac error report from the game crashing / not responding?

No, I had an update waiting that I originally thought was the problem, but I've got automatic updates off to avoid these problems, thank you though!

Yes, no problem! Is there a way to do this without copy and pasting the entire report here? It's very long!

You might want to use a website such as pastebin.com to share text.
Or you can send a file through filetransfer.io for example.

That's great thank you so much! It should be on this link: https://filetransfer.io/data-package/dWDkvoLC#link

Thanks, it seems like the error is just that the game hangs, I cannot find anything too specific to show the reason for it though.

Could you try a few things? It seems like the error report lists some background programs as well, can you try turning all of them off and then start the game?

If it still fails, could you also check if you are missing any updates for your Mac? Since it looks like you might be a version behind. It is possible that the current version would have a problem with the app translation, and the latest version could fix that.

If that also does not help, try going to the Home\Zomboid folder and edit the options.ini file with a text editor.
In that file, edit the fullscreen=true line to fullscreen=false
Then try launching the game again.

Thank you! I've actually changed the options.ini file already and that hasn't worked, but

Thank you for this! I've done all of these and still seem to be having the same problem, there's no update waiting or anything, and it's still just hanging at the moment.

Hm, do you perhaps have a secondary monitor connected? Or do you have it connected to a dock? Just to check if there may be issues with that.

No I don't have anything connected at all. This is the link to one of my debug logs, if that helps at all? https://filetransfer.io/data-package/3EtVRhoi#link

I have a similar problem on MAC as well - bought the game today, wanted to start the tutorial and the game immediately crashed.

Also had to change the fullscreen mode to false because it started in a very strange resolution where no button was clickable.

Here's my error log if that helps: https://pastebin.com/64iMQEnW
Seems to be an index out of bounds exception.

The first time I bought PZ it did this! I ended up returning it as I couldn't get it to work and I was under 2 hours or whatever Steam's parameters are, but I bought it again earlier this year because I really wanted to play and I was determined to try a few more fixes, but it ended up working for months fine! Sorry, I know that's not any actual help, but at least I suppose there is hope for a few hours of gameplay maybe in the future?

This might be helpful, since it just shows a ton of mod errors.. I would recommend going to the Home\Zomboid folder again and deleting everything there except the “Saves” folder.

This should remove your mods and reset your game settings to their default values. Which means that if the issue was caused by the mods it might fix the problem.

Your issue seems to be graphics related, do you have any extra monitors or the dock connected as well? Or are you running any graphical applications in the background?

Thank you so much, this seems to have worked perfectly! I had removed my mods entirely from Steam and deleted Steam/Project Zomboid so I have no idea how they survived, but Vanilla is working perfectly now!

Not to look a gift horse in the mouth but I don't seem to be able to add any mods back, which isn't anywhere near as much of a problem, but I don't even seem to have a mod.info file any more. Would you think this could be fixed by reinstalling the game again? If not no worries, and thank you so much for your help already!!!

Some mods are a bit tricky. There are ones that might even require third party tools. (In other games it is definetly like that.)
I would be careful of readding the mods as it is entirely possible one of your mods was updated and that botched up your whole game. It is not unheard of.
