How do I get yellow floodlights to work?

I keep seeing these large yellow floodlights around and decided to bring some to light up the outside of my compound. But I can't seem to get them to turn on and there's really nowhere that explains it. Are they purely cosmetic or do they actually function as a light source. I checked the PZ wiki and it's not listed as a light source so I'm not too sure.

Try placing them close to your house or generator, idk why but they don’t work if they are a bit further away

So when the power is still on should they just work? I have put bulbs in all and nothing happens when I turn on, but when generator is turned on it works fine and will turn on. Thank you

BTW they are only maybe 5 tiles from house and i even tested them inside house to no prevail. Thanks again

I have no idea if you still need a solution, but I had the same isssue. 2 out of 4 yellow construction projectors didn't work (they didn't emit light and I was unable to turn them on/off or change a lightbulb). Fixed it by taking them into my inventory and reconnecting a server. It worked in multiplayer, but not sure if it will work in singleplayer.
