Can't build shelves above cupboard in a farmhouse

Char just auto-walk to opposite side of a wall and do nothing.

yeah, I have this problem...I think the game wants you to be able to get right up to the wall...sometimes I can't build shelves even on empty walls, and I can't figure out why
