Project Zomboid

Game functions on integrated graphics but not with graphics card.
PC(Windows 10):
GTX 1660 Ti
32 GB of RAM
2x 144hz monitors

I am running 2 monitors - as my graphics card only has one optical display outport I run 1 monitor on the integrated graphics instead. So I can choose to run the game off of either.

Game runs on the integrated, but I get performance issues when zoomed out. When I run PZ on the graphics card all text is illegible and the icon for "The Indie Stone" is just a white square. I have not gone further than the menu from here.

Screen is entirely white on the menu aside from the patch notes button, which text is illegible. Clicking it brings up a window full of the illegible text. Steam overlay has the same with all text rendered the same way as different height squares overlapping.

I haven't seen this issue for anyone else. What is wrong with it? Is it some Nvidia Control Panel setting?

Running compatability mode makes no difference and disabling the steam overlay does nothing. Graphics driver is updated.

Thank you for any help to resolve this issue.

PS: I would screencapture and share but the game is never captured for whatever reason.

Try running the game with the dedicated GPU and then go to C:\Users\YourUserName\Zomboid
Open the console.txt
Copy everything from there to https://pastebin.com/
Share the link to the pastebin here.

This should give us a log of the game after it is ran with the Dedicated GPU, if there are any obvious errors we will be able to check them out in the logs.

Thanks for the help :)

I should state that I am not able to run the game as I can't get past the menu - most of the graphics are just white boxes, that is including the menu background image, potentially the text, but also the logo during loading. The patch notes button is the only one that is not and clicking that opens the patch notes up, but all the text is made of squares.

Same with me except with a 1050ti. Only loads to an entirely white screen though. Integrated works as well.

Figured out a solution. Going to device manager and rolling back the intel driver fixed it.

I didn't have any rollbacks on this. I did try updating the driver instead. It had no apparent effect.

And yes, my screen is not entirely white - the button still exists and I can see the previous splash screens including the "loading lua" and whatnot - that text is simply not legible and comes out as blocks instead.

Hmm, I imagine it could be because of the graphics card forcing certain settings like anti-aliasing on the game, which would create the white boxes and just mess with the game. Can you check your graphics card control panel and see if you have any settings there that force anti-aliasing on all games? Both AMD and Nvidia have control panels where you can change the games for specific games or globally.

I tested it with everything off. Does not have any visible effect on the issue.

Hm, I have two suggestions then. One would be making sure that both your dedicated graphics card and integrated card drivers are up to date. Intel you should find on the laptop manufacturers website. For the Nvidia card go to their official website.

If that doesn't help. Go to "C:\Users\YourUserName\Zomboid"
Open the "options.ini" file
Replace "bMultithreadedRendering=true"
To "bMultithreadedRendering=false"

After that just save the file and try launching the game again.

No dice sadly. I updated both graphics drivers previously. Changing the option made no difference.

Hm, do your monitors have different refresh rates? Can you try setting them both to 60Hz?
If that doesn't help, does this issue persist even if you only play on one monitor or does it only happen when both are connected?

Both my monitors are at 144Hz. I tried setting them both to 60Hz to no avail, BUT.....

Only having the graphics card plugged in works well. Does this pinpoint the issue so that I could have both monitors up while playing the game?

Thanks for the massive amount of help during a rather hectic time I'm sure.

I am not 100% why that would happen, but the game (or other aplications) could get confused since the main graphics card renders the game on the Dedicated card and then it has to go through the Integrated one to the monitor. I am really not sure how to fix that if thats the case really, maybe messing with the monitors but I am out of ideas really if it works with just one monitor.
