Project Zomboid

Where to get lure during a winter? Build 42.
I play CDDA. So no loot and lot of zed, so it is almost impossible to loot kitchens.

So during winter there is no insects. No maggots in dead bodies (at least I haven't seen any in months). Spear fishing was removed. Fishing net requires a recipe which is unobtainable.

So is the only way not to die is a pure random on start? I can loot 1-5 houses (with very low loot and almost everything is empty) and have to restart a game if not? Or I just miss something?

P.S. I know about farm and dead animals. But I play with a mod and start at West Point, where is no farms around. I want to play kinda wilderness-like, but it seems I have to cheat or roll dice until I get some items...

Isn't west from West Point farmlands? (south-west to be precise.)
Also there are quite a few houses there so i am guessing you are doing something wrong already. Which also do not have as many zombies. (Map knowledge?)

During winter you should also be able to find winterberries, so foraging is possible.
Also you should be able to find food in trash cans.
The super-hard, impossible-to-survive challenge is hard, unfair, and almost impossible to survive? That can’t be right.
fish fillet even rotten can be used as a bait, you just need your first fish to start it rolling; aslo saw placing fireplace near you when fishing actually helps to catch fihses even below zero
Rage quitting at 5 houses isn't trying very hard. It takes a VERY long time to starve to death in this game. Fishing and Trapping aren't really viable in winter at low skill but there's plenty of food to loot your way through winter. Try hitting the outskirts of RV parks or areas like the crossroads or the general store West of Riverside. Riverside's gated community is also a good spot to loot because it's easy to get away from zeds over the fences.
Dig furrows for worms

It was fine but in 42 they just broke fishing. Before you just fished with a spear and got fillet for a lure. And there are twice as much zed then before.

Do you understand how many zombies on insane population? When i looted army surplus prev run i killed 900+ zeds only in that area. In West Point you have packs 10-15 zeds at almost every house. And when you try to fight them you attract more packs. So you can loot only isolated houses after killing some dosens zeds with bare hands. And night is coming.

I am not a newbie. Im asking about fishing because i do not understand how it suppose to work. Some decision in b42 makes no sense for me, like carving 5 to get a hook or removing spear fishing to get started. And i asked in case i just stupid and miss something.

Does it work in winter tho? I digged a lot and got nothing. I think it doesn't work.

It does, they just made getting worms significantly rarer in Build 42 compared to 41.

Erm you can starve to death normally with starvation. just miss out food completely for a few days.
I think what you are referring to is dying to emaciation. (When your character's weight drops under a certain weight treshhold.)

Also those loot you are suggesting depends on what loot settings he has.
He already stated he wishes to start in WP, why direct him elsewhere?
WP is completely doable even with these settings, it is just a damn lot harder.
And preferably you should skip town(WP) actually for nearby houses. Like the ones on the west-by-southwest. Even in B41, with max pop levels WP was a very harsh place;)

If you wish to rely on fishing it has been changed. But it is not the bait you will have issues with, but other things. (You can still gain worms from furrows, in B41, they already lowered the chance to get any, i think this was carried over to B42, and maybe tweaked even further, and probably winter also gives further malus to getting worms. Your best bet is getting some insects from trash cans i would say during the winter.)
Basicly you will have to do minigames each time you fish (clickety tap tap), and the catch has a high chance of dependency on your fishing skills.
So under level 5 fishing you will likely catch fish that you cannot even cut up(slice) that have a hunger value of like 4-7.

Another major issue will be getting a rod. As currently makeshift rods only accept one type of stick. If you dont have it you cannot craft makeshift rods. I think it also requires carving or something on level 1 or 2 to be able to make that rod.

It might be filling sacks with dirt to get worms in vanilla. It's either sacks or furrows.

I installed a worm mod where you can right click just dig for worms. Fast forward till you get some.

But vanilla it's extremely tedious to get worms.

I checked on a wiki, it says worms are avaliable from march to november in b42.
trap then use meat as bait. foraging doesnt provide any bait, and nor does digging trowels. only one way.
From my experience, every second field has rabbits, you can easily chase and catch or kill them. It’s much better than low-level fishing. If you can corner and stab a deer, it’ll die soon enough as well. I play melee only, and I don’t have much trouble hunting. Granted, I don’t play CDDA, but it should be doable, albeit hard.

Tracking is easy to lvl up and it works even on lvl 0, it helps but you don't even need it really to spot rabbits.
I currently play long time CDDA, and i can say you don't need fishing lure at winter, how Anna says rabbits your first goal, i know for sure four packs close to your starting zone, lets go
1 right after fence from your starting house in forest or around
2 between small lake and bar, forgot name bar lol
3 close to train station, look arond, can be in forest
4 from bar go to forest on right side, road in forest lead you, around 30 min walking
5 close or somethine to shop in closest trailer park from your starting house
Last one always have alot zeds around
If you have troubles to survive, forgot fishing bcs you need clear first area around small lake or they can catch you right when you fishing it's very big area and chances without fisher occupation not worth it
Just forage for winter berries every day, dont worry about your weight drop, all you need is winter end, try every day clean few packs if you can it very helpful later, what else, hmm, foraging is main thing in CDDA, first week is real pain but after it standart apo for sure just with more zeds
Also if you still have troubles and hope for fishing, do this
After you ok from start, better wait heli event, then move to another farm from gas station in center Muldraugh with crossroads, look at map three lakes and closest will be farm, clean around 6 packs and you got alot meat for few days for gain weight, also you can use this place how base if you want alot fishing, zeds not spawn close to lakes so find cover if you want and stay here but i can say it pain in ass in winter bcs weather so random but here alot fish
In any situation just wait and survive dam winter, never give up, push your luck and you find reward, be careful when shoot events happen, after this few or more hordes start moving
Sry for wall, lol
