B42 indoor/outdoor question for generators
How does it calculate whether it's indoors or outdoors? Does a given enclosed area have to have NO ceilings at all anywhere, or can some portion of it have a ceiling? Can you make a simple chimney area (a couple open tiles) and have that work? I have a 9x15 walled area right now, with one side having a 9x3 area with floor tiles above it and some stairs reaching it for water containers. Will that small area with a ceiling derail the entire 9x15 area?

Thanks.

It's about game logic counting the area as indoors. One of the ways to know if you are outdoors or indoors is a temperature differential.

Alright, I'll watch for that. But what decides indoors v outdoors?

Wall and roof and some jank from there and there.

Does it have to be completely roofed? Can you leave a hole for ventilation?

You over thinking it, keep it simple. The game is not made to be that deep, just built a fence around your generator(outside) and watch over it.

To OP's original question. yes you can build an overhang, wall it around, etc. As long as it is not complete, the game will count it as outdoors.

If you fully complete the walls, roof, windows and doors, game will count it as indoors and you will see a temp change.

You can also check in debug mode for "IsoRegions debugging" if you are actually trying for custom built house and it is missing the "indoors" effect.
Thanks! Glad the room has to actually be enclosed to be... enclosed. I saw some videos online, but they involved modifying pre-generated buildings so I wasn't sure how it would apply (open garages and things like that).
The minimal reqs for indoors are a ceiling and door or wall frames all around. No floor necessary. You don't have to wall up the frames. Gaps anywhere should make it not indoors. Sometimes trying to build off of an existing structure can lead to problems. So best to test with the minimum frames and ceiling first.
