And you can always direct your attention to other games:P
Or find interesting series to watch...
or read a book (heresy i know:P)
And... isn't playing a story-oriented RPG or a visual novel somewhat similar to a good book (or a good read)?
I play either challenging games where you have to think(deck builders, colony sims etc.), or story heavy ones, with good writing, though visual novels dont really get my attention, but good storied RPG-s, I easily get into.:)
But even this much of reading is not enough, i really like to read, so usually in a week i finish 2-3 books:P (Currently reading Orwel's Homeage to Catalonia, i read 1984 ages ago, thereafter not sure if i should continue with some novelists from my country or continue with the Animal Farm:P)
Available for free here: https://crawl.develz.org
There's an online version in browser (allows to spectate games too) and an offline client to download.
I play an outdated (.17) version because of personal preference and dislike for the direction dev headed towards, but it's a good free game, albeit absolutely brutal.
Another roguelike recommandation i would make is Unreal World It's an open world survival roguelike. Low fantasy setting in iron age Finland.
It's playable for free: https://www.unrealworld.fi
But if you play it and like it, why not toss the Finnish devs a squirrel hide on steam. They're real menschs and totes deserve support.

I have a huge backlog of games:P So i dont worry about such, but i do enjoy dungeon crawlers so might give it a look try later on:P
They don't really do stories I like, and I prefer games without having to bother with stories. :)
Mind, Shadowrun Hong Kong had a really cool character, that I usually only found in books.
I gave up on published books though, and used to just reread and polish stuff I wrote for myself (but somehow a day doesn't have enough hours anymore!).
Listening to audiobooks on the other hand is different, I don't have to do the reading myself, and can play something alongside. :)
I played Linley's Dungeon Crawl back when they were still hanging out in rec.games.roguelike.misc. But the guy who took over developing it had too different ideas about what's nice for the game, so I didn't even peek into their stone soup stuff.
Also played Nethack, another actual roguelike (not what Steam calls that), including some Slash'EM.
They used to say, in Nethack, you can be sure to win from turn one, if you know what you're doing and are careful. Crawl just wants you dead.
Reading along here for strategies (too noob to know either way myself), it seems Project Zomboid is more like Nethack than Crawl. :)
Edit: What things do you disagree on in Stone Soup developement?
I've had a fair number of 15 runes runs though. I think (at least for the version i play) there are just combos that reliably do well and others where you're just constantly questionning life decisions ^^
PZ i think would be a bit more like unreal world minus the zombies imo, with a bigger emphasis on exploration and survival. I think it's hard to compare roguelikes with PZ. They're all worth exploring on their own merits though imo
My backlog also begs for attention. :) It grows faster than it shrinks (because of that free Steam games).
The insistance on adding more and more burst damage enemies in lower floors. It's largely the source of the memes about DCSS being just mean to you the player ^^
The removal of Rmut and associated potions
Some god reworks
Some race reworks
The shortening of the branches
among other things... And i am just puzzled by all the weirdo drama in the DCSS dev scene
I started playing DCSS on a version where enemies could do garbage to you like permanently destroy all your potions by attacking you with a frost attack, permanently delete your scrolls with a fire attack and permanently wreck your armour and weapons with corrosive attacks.
Then it seemed to get better, then it kept getting more and more questionable in my opinion. .17 is the last one before the removal of Rmut and that's where i arbitrarily drew the line.
That's interesting, was there a deal with the orange box in some way? was it for orange France?
I got my first 2 steam accounts whenever they started to force me to install steam to play counterstrike and day of defeat. Steam wasn't even a storefront back then ^^ Back then i made an account everytime i changed computers and lost all my passwords ofc. I'd be one of the oldest accounts on steam otherwise probs
Well it does not help that i usually also have a unique playstyle:) But it tends to uncover some strange hidden flaws in games:)
Or not so hidden ones:P Currently i took out an older deck builder and took me a while to realize how basicly the guys whereas they built a good system effed it up completely. As the so called high tier cards are mostly...useless and a noob trap:) (They caught me:P)
Among a few other things.
I still have to finish WoTR luckily an SSD death did not destroy my saves...so that is a plus:D
But it ate all my space haven saves...:(
I also need to look up a bit on a few things to start my app idea:)
I played Nethack first, got it recommended when I complained (late 90s or early 2000s) that all games were turning into sound and graphic orgies without any game inside them. :) There's definitely none of that in Nethack!
I don't remember runes in Crawl, were they added, or did I just forget them?
I mostly remember having fun with summoning hordes of abominations and tentacled monstrosities. And the forever scariest monster I ever saw in any game: a pale "1" (Executioner).
I don't know unreald world.
Relatively recently I looked a good bit into ADOM. Friend posted a Steam key to it in friend activity, and I grabbed it. :) (I'd looked into the free version decades ago, too.) Got distracted by some other game, I think, after a while.
Hmm i don't know man, i think there always was runes in a capacity or another, given that the baseline goal of the game has always been to retrieve the orb of zot and carry it back to the entrance. there are other runes that you must get (3 minimum to enter zot), 17 total but 15 max in any given game.
So technically you can just finish a game with a 3 runes run, but there is a possiblity for an post end game where you instead go get as many runes as you can before finishing the run with the orb of zot.
So not needed and it opens you to going to very, very nasty places, but some builds are designed to withstand that and delete screens of enemies or resist garbage attacks like torment (divides your health by 2 LOL)
Unrealworld is more of a survival game than a roguelike tbh, and in that way it's closest to PZ.
Adom i did hear about but haven't tried yet
I also got my hands on Quasimorph which is an EA roguelike, closer to DOOM RL. Good fun, but EA.
Wow, looks like I got out at the right time. I just didn't like the dev focussing on swords and neglecting magic, or something. (Been a while...)
There's more drama?
What's Rmut?
Sounds reasonable. :)
Forgot to add earlier, I like that you can do all sorts of silly things in Nethack, with possibly positive outcome, like kicking sinks, and wrapping a towel around your head. :)
