Project Zomboid = Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead with graphics?
I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but I can't be the only one who sees the similarity.

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is a roguelike with your standard roguelike graphics. Here's a video series of it.

If you enjoy this game's complexity you might also enjoy Cataclysm, which is free.

You need to love the menu-style and to read about the things that just happen around you to play this with fun (like any other rougelikes).
Its a while ago but I can't remember to grow crops, barricade windows or even create your own structures but what I remember ist hunting down rabbits, a lot mor ranged weapons, military bunkers and spitter zombies ... :/ so these are quite different themes I think.

Love cataclysm, the original had a mod to change the ascii art into tiles and i beleive DDA is adding tiles as standard at some point, not much to compare between cataclysm and PZ though apart from they are both apocalypse simulators. Other than that, the main comparison is the character creation skills, having to choose bad traits to be able to pick good ones, which a lot of classic RPG's have done in the past.
Cataclysm focus' a lot more on a general nuclear apocalypse, so things such as mutated beasts, "special" zombies, cyborg implants etc etc, where as PZ is your classic "romero" style zombie apocalypse, no "special" zombies or mutated beasts.

Cataclysm has intergrated graphics now(or maybe you need to get a graphics pack I forgot). Also that game allows you to build your own Mobile Fortress/Tank/Bus/Etc plus running over things in a vehicle is just fun.

It's crafting system is EXTENSIVE. Implants are fun. Mutations are fun. Leveling skills doesn't require you to level then invest a skill point into it first. Lots of buildable things. Dig ditches for spike traps. Play with rocket launchers. Set houses on fire and more!

Anyways it's a complex game like Dwarf Fortress, but it's not very pretty and it's not as fast paced as PZ. Also there's no multiplayer(when PZ gets it).

From playing the demo, Zomboid doesn't seem as "in depth" as Cataclysm, but I just took the plunge and bought it so hopefully the full game is better.

Regarding the above post, I would say that Cataclysm is incredibly fast paced compared to what I played of the PZ demo.

If you want complexity, it's always a safe bet to lower your graphics expectations. We're (I hope) a half-way house between uber complex intricate Roguelikes like Cataclysm and visceral atmospheric FPS survival games like DayZ and would heartily recommend either of them depending on what people are after. :)

Honestly, with the pace the DDA team work at, I don't see PZ ever being as complex as Cataclysm (more complexity isn't always a good thing, anyway), but I can definitely see a finished PZ matching it for depth.

And the full game is so much better than the demo.

Try getting the latest stable build from the DDA website. It's completely open source, so you can even download the code and comb though it if you're worried it's a virus. (it isn't)

Replying to an old thread because I used to play DDA a lot (not a virus lol, you can build the source yourself). They've added tiles for graphics if you want but the core game is ascii. The first thing I thought of when playing PZ was DDA. Here's are just a few reasons why some people think they are alike and you should try DDA if you like PZ. You will get used to the ascii graphics, and if you want try the tiles.

The maps are very similar. Urban / suburban exploration with wandering undead.

  • The way your sight is a triangle cast of light rays
  • Being able to break down / craft your environment
  • Traits and banes
  • Zombies of course
  • Noise

Both are great games and I doubt PZ is a copy of DDA, maybe just coincedence that they share some similar features.

Cataclysm was a very large influence on Zomboid, theres even the challenge "A very CD:DA"
its a copy of the challenge "A very crappy day" and you know, CD:DA, C:DDA.
I think I was the only one to get the CD:DA joke...
