Just attack the tree and you should hear a satisfying "thunk" sound. Repeat until the tree collapses in to logs, then use that saw to cut the logs in to planks.
I'm not sure if it's to keep the saw as an item balanced, because it'd need to also work as a weapon to cut down trees under the current system (thus making it a one item for all your combat and crafting needs and therefore quite OP) or if it's something that'll be added later - I'd guess the latter, but that is just a guess.
Not quite sure what the probelm you're having is here?
If you have an axe equipped, right click on a tree and you should have the option to chop it down.
LIES
Frying pans, pens, pencils, planks, rolling pins, your fists, and many more have a "treedamage" stat of 0 and will never damage trees.
Axes are 30 or 35 or something, stone axes are 10, virtually every other weapon you'd come across is only a 1 or 2 unless they're 0...
The only thing I'd ever reccommend to cut down a tree with (besides axes durr) is a hammer, only if you have extras of them. It only does 1 damage bet swing, but they have good durability and are fairly easy to find extras of lategame.
Trees have something like 165 hp, each hit on a tree does as much damage as the 'treedamage' stat of a weapon. Weapon stats are all in the game's item.txt or newitems.txt files...
Under Project Zomboid folder>media folder>scripts folder.
This topic was started last year where any weapon could knock down a tree. Lot of changes in a year
Axes - 35
Sledgehammer - 10
Hammers - 1
Screwdrivers - 1
Kitchen Knives - 1
Baseball Bats (with and without nails) - 1
Butterknives - 1
Everything else is 0 or doesnt even have a treedamage value in the item.txt file
Chainsaws are confirmed to eventually be in the game, though, and you could kill TONS of trees with those bad boys.
