And to be clear here, The value is Encumbrance- Not weight. It's an amalgam of size/weight/shape/unwieldliness. So you can have a high encumbrance but low-weight item because it's an awkward shape and unwieldly to put in and out of your inventory; Or a low encumbrance but seemingly high weight item because it's an easy shape and is easy to manipulate.
And yes- 50 is max. There's cheat mods that get around this by setting the players current weight to like negative 1 million- But positive 50 is the limit, and I haven't seen a mod yet that can increase that.
There's no item in vanilla that has over 40 encumbrance.
Back then the game tracked your bag's content separetely from your inventory so you could load on lots of low weight and high yield bags (e.g. garbage bags) that you could then fill. It was not and never was about picking up something in your general inventory which is caped at 50.
I argued, then, that a buffer zone for unequiping stuff (as they benefit from a % decrease) would be OK. e.g. a Sledgehammer whic is 6, but decrease significantly when equiped. Where would be the fun of having your sledgie drop because you are over-limit?
My guess is that the product so far has removed the default fill 100+ bags with stuff, but also they kept the possibility to go slightly above the line. It's pretty much the essence of what I suggested so I'm happy with the end result.
Also, back then I could carry 2-3 fridges by having one in each hands and one in my pockets (i.e. the general inventory)... it was ludicrous and fixed.
