Building without a saw?
So today I started a playthrough with a hermit ranger, where I'll be mostly running around the woods and staying away from civilization all together, not allowed to use modern technology, and then it hit me:

How am I supposed to build a roof/floortiles if there's no saw?

It seems kind of ridiculous that there's no alternative to roofing other than wooden planks, right?

well you can get planks from foraging and destroying doors. But its way slower.

if you have the outdoorsman perk, you can sleep in a tent, with log walls unless your a roamer/camper then you can just have a kettle or pot and fill it with river water to boil, gather some mushrooms via foraging and make soups :)

And then die from sickness because there's no roof.

No need to be rude, its all in how you manage what you have, if you set up a area to hang out in for the winter, stock some non perishables then you can go there for the winter and wait it out, stock up fire wood and some supplies

I'm unaware how text would state rudeness.

Starting out in anything that is not simply summer temperatures outside will get you killed, is my point.

I heard there is some bug with player made housing where it doesn't protect you from the cold anyways. so even if you made your own roof, it won't protect you from the cold.

i read somewhere you had to be inside a game generated shelter.

just make a campfire I guess.

I think the saw is kind of a gamebreaker. I get it's important to have a saw when making things from wood. I'm a woodworker. But the fact is that you may have to search through dozens of garages, or get lucky at the big warehouse, or suicide run the hardware store before you find a saw. While it does feel like a huge achievement to finally get one, it sucks that you really can't begin to build till you find one.

I'd prefer being able to craft a bonesaw for basic floor laying

Then again, I'd also prefer they'd throw some decent freakin' metalworking in this game by now.

Some of the things in the looting surprise me with how rare they are... like trowels, saws, and even spades and sledgehammers. I'm not saying everyone has all of these, but everyone seems to have 3-10 hammers and nothing else in these games. Personally I have a hammer, screwdriver, and a trowel. But I'm sure someone on my block has a saw or a shovel. Some of these things are absolutely critical for surviving like you can't use a stick to poke holes in the ground, you NEED a trowel. For building, there has to be more that we can do besides requiring a saw (doors for planks is fine for some parts, but still only so much you can get). Log floors and log ceilings might not be absolutely practical, but could at least help.

The multiplayer is where this really shines if loot doesn't respawn in areas, you can't find a saw or sledgehammer, you are pretty much screwed. All the doors are already smashed, so sawing logs is the only source of planks and without that saw, you can't get your construction level up, you can't even make a water source which is also very unrealistic (puddles after rain, garbage barrels outside would fill up with water, even I can take a garbage bag and put it in a small box to get a few days worth of water from rain). So ultimately joining a server with no loot respawn or all the critical areas have stopped respawning loot, you can't survive.

Of course, I think a better solution is starting certain classes with an item, Construction Worker gets a sledgehammer, Carpenter gets a saw, Lumberjack gets an axe, etc. Something that goes with the jobs because it's unrealistic to think that a Police Officer woke up one day, saw it was a zombie apocalypse and suddenly realized his gun magically vanished. A way to combat the OP weapon portion of this would be having the items heavily damaged that can be, so weapon-wise an axe or a gun won't survive long, but they exist and could be repaired, if nothing else.

I definitely agree with this, and especially the latter part of the post. Starting out with a heavily damaged piece of equipment related to your job would be a great addition.
