Besides trying to keep things hidden and inconspicuous, the best method I know of to secure a base is to make it above the ground floor and remove any means of getting up. That means putting some sheet ropes down, destroying/dismantling any stairs, then climbing up and removing the sheet ropes behind you. Someone would then need the materials and level 3 Carpentry to build stairs and reach your stash.
what me and a friend did on a base was you would travel up the riverbank until you hit a rotten orange, then turn a right into the woods and keep going for about a minute and you will hit our base.
it works.
Thier IS a trapping skill why cant we make some kind of Trap to detour and defend against Human/Zombie threats?.
Level 1 traps can't be noticed by someone how has no skill in that skill
Level 2 traps can be noticed by someone how has level 2 in that skill and so on and so forth
And of course the Victim will make a loud Yell which will be heard by any near by zombies and then the guys basically lunch meat. If he can get out of the trap and escape in time anyways.
