wood planks too heave
personally i think that the ratio of 'carry capacity -> wood planks' weight is a bit off. my character can carry 3 planks before he gets the heavy load moodlet which means that i can either do 6 planks and walk slowly (AKA 2 walls) or one and regular speed. im finding that building a large base is extremely hard because of the weight and i think that they should either be lowered to 2 or 1.5. anyone else agree?

This is one of the reasons I prefer selecting the 'athletic' and 'strong' traits-- allows a character to carry way more than normal.

Well, the way I see it is, imagine cutting down a large tree, you woudn't be able to just stick it in your backpack very easy, right? So cutting that huge log into a few planks doesn't make the total weight less, it just reduces the amount of weight you have to carry at one time.

profile name i dont mean that but if you think about it, there should be someway to make planks easier to carry. its just so tedious in the game to have to cut down a tree pick up two logs/saw them, hobble back to where you are building with a risk of back injury and build 2 walls before doing it over and over again. its taken me half an hour to build 2 walls of my first floor.

rez why do you use claustrophobic? does that not freak your char out whenever you are looting buildings?

You can carry 14-15 planks if you conserve inventory space and only take a hammer and some nails. I don't think back injury is in yet, not sure. It is very slow but it seems ok, seeing as planks are quite heavy. Building a base will take quite a while though: (check my base screenshot, both took +- 8 hours real time) It is easier to hang out a sheet rope to get to the first floor faster.

they havent made it so that you can get a back injury yet

I think their current relative weight is reasonable. It's not like building a house should require no effort.

By the way, for anything in the build menu, the materials can be on the ground as well as in main inventory. This can only help to make building very slightly less tedious, but good to know.

yea i carry 12-15 planks at a time, and usually I dont cut logs till i get them home. Alot faster to pick up 3 logs then 9 planks. And if you use a large hike bag on your back and one in your offhand with your hammer in primary when building you can carry a ton of planks

Yes, it does, but I tend to fight outside and hide inside, so I'd rather be freaked out when I'm hiding (as opposed to when I'm fighting). The -4 makes it worth it, in my opinion.

Build your base near a forest.... Helps out alot.... Also, break down doors in other houses or unused doors in your base for quick wood....

No that's not a sexual metaphor

rez thats actually a pretty good idea. i use strong/lucky so i dont have a huge carrying capacity. in my next char im going to try your char's traits and if back injury isnt in yet then it makes it more reasonable. when back injury is in though i dont think its fair to say you can carry 6 planks but risk back injuries. i have 2 big hiking bags (back/secondary) each of them can carry 2 logs/6 planks which adds 12 planks and i can carry 5 more logs before i can barely move (like 5 minutes to get to my house which is next to a forest). but as soon as back injury is in its going to take AGES so i dont have to risk back injury.

Don't forget you can use actual rope to bind logs together into a stack of 2,3 or 4 to reduce weight. You'll need one unit of rope per log. don't forget to actually equip the stack and get that added weight reduction bonus.
Can't remember exactly where, but I remember they've got some kind of item storage vehicles in the works. Like a sled or shopping cart. I'm hoping radio flyers =D
On a side note, doesn't "weight" seem a bit deceptive? I think it'll make more sense to consider it "encumbrance rating" which takes the volume and overall dimensions into consideration.
Saiint Jan 18, 2015 @ 1:53am
i did not know that. thanks buff. and that sled soundss really useful. you would think that a char could carry about 8 planks easily (i know i can and im hardly strong) without barely being able to walk
