Stone axes, worthless?
One of the first thing I did after b29 got released, was start a new server, and going out to scavenge.

Having not found an axe in the first hours of play, I was happy to try the new craft it yourself axe, so we could get at least some rudimentary barricades on our safehouse.

Crafted the first axe, and since I didn't have a saw, I started to chop down a door in a neighboring house for planks instead.

Guess what broke first .. Yes, the axe, and the door was left unscathed.

Is this really by design? Seems like its a completely unusable tool, and it seems like it should be an early-game item.

Of course it should not be as sturdy as a regular axe, but come on, not even a single door, thats just useless.

The door isn't really unscarthed as it still lost HP.
And yes this is by design.

Stone axex aren't meant to hold forever.

There is also the maintenance skill now which helps keeping it up for longer.

Other than that, the stone axe is really meant more as a weapon and for chopping down up to 3 trees.

It is an early game item, but it's not designed as a mid-game item too.

What I mean is, yup, it's gonna broke easily, it's intended, we don't want the player to feel like "oh, stone axe, no need to look for an axe !", it's a temporary solution.
You can also chop down trees with it and build log wall, which doesn't need saw ;)

Edit : NINJA'D ?! *throw shuriken, disapear in a smoke screen*

I didn't expect it to be as sturdy as a regular axe at all, but, if I can chop down a tree without it breaking, I makes logical sense that it should be able to cut down a door as well.

At least, doors where I live is not anywhere near as resilient as a regular tree, but of course, its possible that the doors in PZ are made of ironwood or something similar ;)

A chipped stone will work a lot better against trees than doors, believe me.

Also, there is a randomizer in it too - I had an axe break down only half a tree once too ;).

I think the chance for it to loose durability is 20%

It could be argued that if doors are in fact stronger than logs, then we should be able to just take them of their hinges, and build barricades using them instead :)

You could only do that from inside a house though since hinges are usually not on the outside ;)

Not all doors are wood in reality, either, even if the ones in PZ pop out planks.

If it looks like wood and behaves like wood, then it is, for all intents and purposes, wood.

It really makes no sense arguing that a door is not wooden, if it has all the properties and behaviour of a wooden door.

Thats exactly my point. A door having more hit points than a tree?

It might be coded that way, but that makes no sense at all.

A lot of doors on suburban houses in real life are made of metal, are hollow, and painted with a wood finish.

Hell, my apartment door is metal, too. Just painted with a finish that looks like wood.
