The thing is some people love discover thing by their own, if you're not one of them (i'm not really one of them, eh :D), check the wiki ;)
Basically, craft food require a "base" like a water pot for soup, a pot for stew, do a pie dough for.. pie... bread slices for sandwich, etc, etc.. Check this usefull frenglish post : http://theindiestone.com/forums/index.php/topic/7417-the-new-cooking-system/ :p
And building require a hammer, then you right click on the ground and you'll see the "crafting" menu with everything you need :)
It's like irl, you have to think "ok, i need to survive, what should i do..." and if it's not in the game, make a suggestion and we may add it :)
You can use craft helper or the wiki to see possible craft, but maybe after NPC we could add NPC teaching you craft or book to learn some, etc...
I think experimenting with different things is cool and the fun of the game but I think having it in my inventory is what annoys me (whilst trying to see what goes together). Maybe Workbenches could be crafted with shelves etc? then you could just simply drag and drop onto the work bench from the shelves to see what can work?
Right now I'm having fun making soup XD
