Door Keys
This is a bit frustrating and I know it's an early-access game, but why were these so poorly designed? The padlocks work great, but the door keys are a big fail.

I've collected plenty of knobs/keys only to find they don't actually work when I put them on a door... as if they didn't retain the information that they are a key/knob combination.

I've even tried storing the keys/knobs in bags separately to keep them organized because when you install a knob you don't know what key goes with it if you have a bunch in your inventory.

Lastly, you should be able to change out the knobs without tearing down the entire door. Which I might add if you tear down the door the knob/key combination again loses its locking properties and it becomes just a regular knob.

Now I have collected keys/knobs that do work. The only way I can make it work is if I keep the knob/key in my main inventory and only collect 1 set of knob/keys. If I collect multiple in my main inventory they work but I won't know which knob/key works until I build the door.

I believe that each key corresponds with a certain door, so it can be difficult to find a match. Your best bet is to kill a few Zeds that you find inside a house, one of them is likely to be the former home owner, so the key should work for the door to the house.

Yeah you must have misread. :P I know how door keys work, but they don't work properly.

Ah... I see. My bad. I generally don't tend to use keys as I play mainly single player or split screen, so I can't really relate anyway I'm afraid.

tbh i never get drops off zombies when cleaning out a house. also when i tore down the door with the key i got when starting in sandbox, its doesnt work like it should do when building....*shrugs* not bad if you not in open server but if you are and you wanna keep your hosue safe well....good idea but needs little more work maybe :/

I've had a bunch of success with door/keys working. The key (pun) is to make sure your key matches the door before you tear down the door, you can do this by either locking/unlocking the door or by hovering over the key in your inventory and it will show you which doors the key is for by highlighting the door.

If you're scavenging for multiple door knobs and keys, there is no way of sorting them. I've tried sorting them in separate bags but then they don't work when I install them. Also if you do install one and get it working but later decide to tear it down, the knob will no longer function as a lockable doorknob on your next door.

Like I said I don't know why the doorknob/keys don't work like padlocks. Maybe if you have the key + screw driver you can remove a doorknob... I dunno, hopefully the developers figure it out. I was just wondering if anyone else was experiencing these problems or if they have a solution that they use.

yeah, i have the same problem. and i even don't know how to make a padlock.

You have to find padlocks, you can't make them.

Dreygar thanks for the advice on padlock.
Eventually i know what happened! Once you want make a door, be sure to take the compatible knob on your hand (main inventory). the door key WON'T WORK if we leave the knob on the ground when making the door!

What a finnicky pain in the ass. Even with Necroforge and that lock making mod this is still a hassle. I quit trying to make locking doors. I'll just use a barricade plank as a makeshift swinging bar "lock"...
