Fishing spears

I was poking around on the wiki and it said that spears could be used to fish with, and so I grabbed a tree branch, made a spear, and spent a whole day at the river trying but now I get to walk home with an empty pack and belly. I'm just wondering if it's something that might have just gotten recently added to the game and hasn't been fully implimented or if I'm just that bad at fishing. I just want to know before I try again, if it's not going to work, I don't want to waste my time when I could spend it seeking out other options for food.

I've used the spear to fish successfully at level 0. I found that i catch more in the afternoon and nothing during the day. I usually fish between 1800-2000hrs with some success. By success I mean a fish or two doing it for the full 2 hours. I found fishing at other times to be largely a waste. I haven't tried early morning though.

Also, as already mentioned don't bother fishing in the winter if you're low level. If you fish for 3-4 days between the hours of 1800-2000 and don't catch anything then I'd say it might be a bug.

That is because the best times to catch fish irl are early morning and late afternoon. Or was it dusk and dawn? Forgot already...

I just spent a week straight (besides driving to and from, rest and such) so about 18 hours per day fishing with the spear, nothing... zerooooo =D and that is with fishing skill at 1 (obviously not high) but still this is to anyone looking this up, it's still not a viable option.

At low lvls the only times i seem to catch fish with a spear is from 4-7 am and 5-9 pm and it is 1-2 fish per session most of the time. Fishing in the middle of the day is a waste of time with the spear. Use that time to bait traps, farm or forage.

Yeah I remember time of day being a factor in catching fish. Dawn/dusk is the best bet.

Still better off with a fishing rod over the spear though.

As stated above, fish between 6:00-8:00 AM and 18:00-20:00PM for best results with the spear. If you have no fishing skill using the spear to grind it up before using a rod can certainly be a benefit if you have the time and another reliable source of food.

I find that if you just move over a bit your luck can change. Best times are 6-9 am or pm, skill isn't super important, but the time is. I have found that no matter how much you fish an area you can't deplete the fish unless the bar is down to zero, which is only temporary. Fish and berries are the easiest way to feed yourself
