Chopping trees down without an Axe
Hey guys i'm new to this game so i'm sorry if this question has been asnwered.

I looked up cutting down trees on wiki, and it recommended using a golf club if an axe isn't available, well I tried using one and was swinging away for a few IRL minutes and nothing happened, how long does it take to "cut" down a tree witha non-axe? and wheres a good place to find an axe, I kinda assumed the lumber mill, so I took a trek up there but unfortunetly I was bitten and shortly died of zombification (I found no axe at the lumber mill)

Warehouses sometimes have an Axe. The railyard will too. And if you have the Lucky trait, dead zombies will sometimes have an axe.

I thought I heard that recently, changes were made so only an axe would cut a tree down now. But I am not sure.

Yes only axes will take down trees now, with anything else it takes more hits than it has durability to down trees

Dont forget, you can make the low end stone axe.It wont last very long, a few trees at most in the begining, but its easy to get the resouces for it with forage.I went thru over 10 of the damn things so far, trying to conserve my real axes best i can.

You can cut them down with a stone axe. You require 'chipped stone' to create this which is found from foraging. It's a bother but you can do this is a last resort if other players are nicking all the axes. They tend to leave all the repair materials behind so I tend to repair a stone axe 10+ times before I discard it and make a new one. And the higher your carpentry skill gets the more you can repair them each time.

But where foraging is concerned, it's probably less effort to just search every axe spawn point on the map then keep clicking on those bushes and waiting forever

Yeah I found out the other day that foraging was a thing! didn't know you could repair the stone axes though, my carpentry skill is level 0 though, not sure how to level it up as all the things in the build menu need carpentry 2+ :X

You can repair tools with glue, wood glue, duct tape, or adhesive tape. The more times you repair an item the less condition is restored in future. The higher your carpentry skill the more condition is restored. At level 10 carpentry I can fully restore an axe with a single bottle of wood glue.

The 2 ways to level carpentry from 0 ar by making sticks of making log walls. Sticks have very few uses but are a fast training method. You require logs and a saw. You cut the logs into planks, and then cut the planks into sticks, then drop the sticks and repeat.

Log walls are useful even at high levels. They require 4 logs and 4 ripped sheets to craft. They are extremely sturdy and take a long time to break through without an axe or a sledgehammer and so they make for excellent defenses. I've never seen zombies break one of these before. The downside is how time consuming they are to make. You can make two walls for a single ripped piece of clothing but each wall piece requires you to cut down two trees and gather the logs. You will very quickly become tired doing this and need to keep stopping to recover. Sawing the logs into planks and making wooden walls is twice as efficient provided you have the nails, you can build 2 wooden walls for the cost of one log wall, but log walls are so much stronger and don't require nails.

I tend to use log walls for the first floor of my home. I also tend to knock out the doorways and windows of buildings with a sledgehammer and replace them with log walls to keep zombies out and then enter and leave the building via rope ladders that zombies cannot climb.

TL;DR version: Logs > Planks > Sticks for fast exp or Logs + Ripped Sheets > Log Walls for utility

If I have enough wood, I usually will build 3 log walls inside my fort around any door/window that I don't actively use. That way if something gets through the main barricade it would still have to bang its way through the extra line of defense. I've had too many bases get swarmed and trying to recover the loot you need while your base is burning down/being swarmed is hair-raising...nothing worse than watching months of in-game work have to be abandoned and then to boot you had to leave all your cabbages, aces and shotgun shells behind. Keeping a bug-out bag by you emergency exit could also be worth doing, if you've got the supplies for it.

Or you could eliminate every single one of these problems by not having a base and just hoboing around.

I always build the log walls with no openings around the house I plan on making my base. Then build a stairway with a window overhang, with a rope ladder to the outside. Zed will never get in but you can come and go as you want.

I dunno, being homeward bound 100% of the time just... well it CAN'T be done forever, eventually every resource of food is devoured, destroyed, or degenerated to a point of inedibility, i mean sure, it can work decently for probably up to two to three ingame years, if you arent that skilled at not dieing you will never see this problem arise, but in the end nomatter what you do, you have to pick up some kind of food gathering skills, all of which highly limit were it is you will be at.

Well i mean technically you could level up foraging, but thats... slower then a snails pace even...

Hey, I never said it would be fun OR easy...just that it's doable and low-maintenance. Seeing as how bags don't deteriorate two hiking bags will let you carry more than enough food/firewood/camping gear. Between foraging, trapping, and fishing reliance on canned food/vegetables can be curbed significantly. Currently the game doesn't really reward the hobo player with anything more than mobility and a high survivability ratio, hopefully closer to release they will add a little bit more incentive to really make that a viable option.

Easy way is to catch birds. They only require sticks and wire to make the traps and worms are easily acquired in infinite quantities. You can farm or fish if you fancy a trip to the mental asylum

Currently playing a hobo character. It's actually kind of fun.
