Also you don't need a sledgehammer for self-build walls. Just hit them long enough and they will go down too.
If you use an axe (preferably the foraged one since those are easily replaced), you get back planks and nails.
True but while you're doing all that hitting with everything else, you're also making a ton of noise and drawing the attention of anything still moving. It's also draining away the stamina remaining on a potentially good weapon.
Though now you've made me curious about if I can use a fork or spoon to tear down wooden walls...
You also get none of the materials back from destroying walls/etc this way.
