How do you make a second floor?
After google-ing around I found some reddit posts that linked to this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mL5NhUDz71k&list=PLJ7WogW7ti8yplimk7lgtLG_evymNOvd7#t=290

I did what the video said to do and it wasn't working for me and then I saw the date on the video and I was wondering if anything has changed since that build. I just bought the game and am on the 7th or so play through and actually surviving so I don't want to die simply because I couldn't build a fort.

You grind carpenting to level...3?, build a staircase (which puts one floor tile at the top of the stairs) letting you build up there.

You can't do it any other way than staircases or using existing 2-7th floor buildings to bridge over to your place.

In fact - If you go to the downtown areas of the two cities, you can find stores and offices with pre-existing staircases and flat roofs. Find or build a window, put up a rope ladder and block off the staircase and you've got a pretty good basis for building your own base in a safe environment - If only to learn the system.
How do you build once you have the stairs though? Building a "floor" just selects a square in the background on the ground
you need to make floor square, I dont know if the log stair gives you a top square, the regular staircase does, even so it is easy to fall off or place the new square first floor ground because of the isometric detail, takes a bit of practice
I figured it out, it builds a square at the top of the stairs that's invisible until you're on it, so you have no idea it's there unless you try to walk off the top.
