What does luck do?
Just wondering what the luck trait does, does it increase your chance of finding good loot or...

I THINK it alters the way the game calculates the assorted RNG events, by adding a percentage to a more favorable out come. Does this bite attack cause an infection, does that attack break the skin, does this house have an alarm, will this attack be a critical, things like that.

But, that is complete speculation, I might be entirely wrong.

It's a shame, would have been pretty cool to have alarm existence and stuff like that random, as well.

The alarms are randomized server-by-server (or instance-by-instance in singleplayer) if I understand the function correctly. Here's the wiki entry:

I'm 15 days into a game with a toon who chose the Unlucky trait. Weapons set to Rare. I can't find a sledge. I started in West Point, and I've cleared out about 10 garages/sheds, been to the storage place and the large warehouse and still no sledge. I'm definitely feeling the pain. Also, I've only ever found 2 axes so far. LOTS of baseball bats, maybe 12, but only 2 axes. No Wood Glue yet, either. Also having a hard time finding chipped stones when foraging. And whenever I find seed packets, they're always cabbages or strawberries.

I'm guessing the above would be much different if I had chosen Lucky instead. I don't think I'll take Unlucky ever again.

<edit> The more I think about it, I'm just going to abandon this toon! Being Unlucky sucks!

I've tried a lot of different builds and this is what works best for me:
