Is there a way to build light sources that don't rely on batteries?
as the title says, I want to try building a base out in the woods but the only light sources I've been able to get are lamps on posts which need batteries, is there any mechanic to take lights from houses and move them into player-built housing? Or is there a magazine or something that teaches you how to build lights to connect to a generator?

You can move light fixtures but will need a generator. Use the same interface you do to move furniture.

the only light fixtures I've ever found I can move are things like table-lamps, is there a way to remove lights from ceilings or outside walls?

lights that are invisibly on the ceiling? like turn on with a light switch? NO.

outside lights, on buildings, YES. use the pick up tool, as you use it for table lamps.

I never knew that, thank you! Maybe now I can build a castle without being in the pitch black lol
You can build a fire indoors so long as it's not on, or surrounded by, wood or carpet. Tile, dirt, sand, etc. is all fine. Lighters also provide light but only for about an hour, hopefully candles will be a thing soonish

< You can't have a light ... > You will need a generator to power the light if you don't want it to run on batteries. BUT you can make a battery connector to a lamp, even the outdoor lamps, with a groovy enough level of electric. I also use table lamps (run by battery) in multiplayer- when out at night on the streets. I place it down in the road, so my team can see the surroundings while executing zombies. < ... without a dark to stick it in. >
You can build ceiling lights in debug mode, using the brush tool.

Go into -debug mode, click Debug Menu in left menu, click Cheats, check Brush Tool and click Save. Right-click on the ground and select Brush Tool Manager. Then you click Choose Tile. Then you see a menu with all the game's building tiles, sorted in categories.

For ceiling lights you choose for example [NEW]lighting_indoor_03 and choose one of the appropriate ceiling lights. You can then place them somewhere in-world. You can click the light to turn it on, as long as you have a running generator nearby, but you can't connect them to a lighting switch. So you leave the lights always on or shut them off manually.

Yes. Added this in above post. You can use this mod for seeing the range of the generator:

In b42, flood lights are OP. In b41, they aren't as good, but definitely a great source of light if you want to build your own base from nothing.

Antique/old stoves and campfires/firepits are also great sources of light and heat.
