Project Zomboid

endless chicken lol (hutch bug?)
One evening, I took 1 rooster, 4 hens, and 2 chicks from the farm and settled them at my place. I went to sleep, and the next day, I noticed my FPS had dropped to 3-5, even though this had never happened before.
At first, I blamed it on mods, but then I accidentally glanced at my animal zone and saw that instead of 7 chickens, the game had spawned around 50 chickens overnight! And, apparently, they kept coming out of the hutch.

The game is unplayable, so I’ll start by demolishing the hutch, and if that doesn’t help, I’ll have to kill all the chickens, although a colleague in a neighboring thread mentioned that in such cases, all the animals might go crazy...

What’s interesting is that this didn’t happen with the two sheep that were also in the zone :)

You can fix this by going to your Users/YourUserName/Zomboid/Saves folder and find the save in question.
Then go to the apop folder, and sort them by size. The largest file is where your chickenpocalypse is happening, so just delete it.

This unfortunately means you'll lose all your chickens, but you can always spawn a couple back in using debug mode.

And obviously always make backups before manually editing saves.

yes this is a well known bug called the chickenpocolypse. don't let your chickens go in the hutch, it's useless anyway and the glitch occurs when they come out of it. it happens when a baby animal grows into an adult for some reason so if you don't have any chicks it won't happen.
