(b42) most efficient way to lvl mechanics?
hi steam discussion pz chads i come to you once again asking for sage wisdom

i've always been a burglar meta build andy because its just so much easier to get cars that way, but if i want to survive longer i want to be able to take care of the vehicles i have but i've always heard that leveling mechanics is super tedious

can anyone recommend me the best way to lvl my mechanics skill so i can repair my cars easily? are there vhs tapes available?

First and most important is to find those mechanics books so you get a multiplier for each level.

You get more exp by removing from one car and installing on another car. So try to get as many cars as you can. Park them next to each other. Group them according to their size and type.

If you're able to hotwire cars this wilil make things much easier. But if you cannot, try to get your electronics to level 1 and mechanics level 2 I believe so you can hotwire cars.

In general try to remove parts that are the same level as your current mechanics level. Those give the most xp.

For example, at mechanics 6 I was repeatedly removing car brakes and suspensions between 6 different heavy-duty size cars. I also removed car windows/doors/seats just for the extra xp.

At level 0, Start by removing lightbulbs, radio, battery and installing in other cars. If no other car then just reinstall back in og car.

Then go to tires, driver seats, car windows, doors, brakes, suspensions. At higher levels I just kept the tires off and uninstall/reinstall brakes, suspensions, windows, their doors and seats.

At the higher levels took a 2-3 days just to get 1 level with the books.

Again having the skill books and multiple cars will make things go much faster.

there's no wisdom. you just gotta grind it, man...take apart the cars, put it back together, repeat daily.

Carzone vhs series is your best bet, btw. There are others but they're pretty obscure finds.

edit: maybe there is a bit of advice...failed mechanics actions aren't limited to be performed once daily and still give xp. The once per day limit only applies when you succeed the action on the particular part. So you grind on that xp for longer, the downside of that is that the part eventually breaks completely and you won't be able to practice on it anymore.

auto-mechanic mod is the only way to do it that isn't horrible in my experience. read your book, find a spare car and bring it to a safe location, get your requisite tools (lug wrench, screwdriver, jack and wrench) open the hood and I think you can click on any part and click 'auto-train mechanics' or something like that and fast forward. It's the best way. otherwise the amount of clicking around and managing the procedure is truly the definition of tedium. you can add it to your save but y'know, its unstable so proceed at your own risk.
Just haul a sacrificial car to your base and take it apart and put it back together again till desired level is achieved. Focus on the light bulbs, battery, radio, and seats as they fail less.

oh yeah, don't forget to level welding too if you're aiming to maintain your vehicles. imo, that's more of a pain than leveling mechanics.

Main thing to keep in mind is that there is a 24 hour cooldown that prevents getting full xp from doing each thing on a car. You can remove a seat and put it back in and get full xp for both, but if you remove it again you will get severely reduced xp. Books as always are important, but you can also spend some time each day or every other day taking apart what pieces you can and putting them back together.
There's a particular mod I use called something like automechanics. Doesn't really do much other than automate the whole training process for mechanics. Where instead of manually clicking to uninstall and reinstall a part. You right click on one part, click train mechanics and it does the entire car for you. It's a really nice qol mod that takes away one of the most needlessly grindy skills. It ain't a hard skill to grind, like tailoring, just really boring.

"removing from one car and installing on another car" sounds like a waste of time imo. Pretty sure you get the same amount of exp regardless, so it's better if you just uninstall the part then immediately reinstall it again. You can even queue the actions if you work one vehicle at a time.

Also, failing to install/uninstall still gives exp. So doing the process on a junker car is a great way to level up early on, since you can just fail over and over until you can't do anything with the parts anymore.
