If all fails, just look for a hunter basement or garage. You'll get plenty of traps.
also, life and living on july 14 is supposed to give the Crate Trap recipe but instead gives Trap Crate, wrong name so that currently broken. (in case you've noticed you learned something watching TV)
and yes, mousetraps are available but need to be found as loot, that's an option and hunter basements/garages can be hard to find--great if you do.
there is a guaranteed location for a snare trap in muldraugh at the south trailer park that's between the L&B warehouse and the Stor-a-Max. Take that snare trap and make sure you research it to learn the craft.
If you want to get into trapping--although, not a really recommended way to get food in my point of view--I would recommend you start doing it early. If you are able to loot the skillbooks for it, all the better, but make sure you catch the broadcast or get the VHS for life and living on July 14 or Exposure Survival Ep6. You need to start early to level up to at least level 2 in trapping where you unlock the stick trap. This is key because the longer you wait, the less bait become "reliably" available. That is until you get competent with farming cabbage/carrots. Having stick traps unlocked will allow you to use cockroaches, crickets, grasshoppers, and worms to bait birds. All of which are very easily foraged baits even at unskilled foraging levels. Worms can be dug from the ground with enough patience. You can use this method to reliably skill up trapping and even get a good stock of small bird meat along the way. As you level up you will unlock the rest of the trap recipes if you haven't found their magazines by then.
Hope this strategy helps.
