Carving Question
Trying to get a handle on the new skill system.

I'd like to build a stick trap. Used to be easy, but so much grindier now...OK, so I need 4 wooden rods for the stick trap. I can't carve a wooden rod until I get Carving 1. Carving spears to level would be useful, but to carve a spear I need a long stick. To get long stick I need...a sapling? How do we get saplings exactly?

You don't really need saplings or long stick to craft spears. Rakes can also be carved to create spears.

If you really want saplings, you can get them from chopping down trees.

Aside from that, you can also carve things from tree branches to level carving skill. So foraging also works.

You can also go around garages to find wooden rods, long sticks, and handles. Handles can be shortened from long > medium > short > spoon. Each process giving separate exp too. So you want to look out for all of them.

Moin.

You don't need to craft spears. You can also carve wooden stakes to level up, using large branches that you can find in the landscape or get when you chop down a tree.

If you have Scrap Wood lying around, you can use that to craft Small Handle. Gives you XP on carving.

You can also carve stakes from tree branches, which you can also get by clearing brush.
if you cut down trees it has a chance to give saplings, i like to aim for the dark green christmaslike pine trees,, cave the sappling into a stick first, then carve that into a spear, i like to use spears, that and what other people mentioned with the handles, when cutting down the trees for the grind i saw them into planks for barricading which raises carpentry and you can also use planks to build oil press and all those little weird molds you need for other stuff, also levels carpentry
