Project Zomboid

Does drinking contaminated water turn you into a zombie?
I drank water from a pot in the kitchen and my character started to feel nauseous and then, a nervous wreck.
I wonder if this was caused by the zombie attack or if it was the water I drank in the game.

It wont zombify you. As far as I know you can only get infected by the virus via a bite, laceration or scratch. Tainted warer will make you nauseous for a while but thats about it, although if thats all you drink for an extended period it becomes more dangerous.
it will give u food poison and eventually kill u if ur not careful . never drink it !!!!

Bah, drinking river water and rain water is totally fine...
<takes a sip>
See? No problem at...oh god where's the toilet?

Really though, it won't kill you unless you have weak stomach, but it will make you sick. If you drink too much of it, yeah it *could* kill you if you don't keep an eye on your health. Avoid if you can, but in a pinch it's okay. Probably a good idea to keep some lemongrass handy just in case.

funny thing is that if you drink directly from the river/lake you will be perfectly fine...but put it in a bottle and it will be a fatal sickness.

Makes me smile that drinking from a toilet is safer than drinking rainwater.
If i drank water that gave me brown hydropump, then i would rather turn into a zombie.

Ever play Oregon Trail? Tainted water is how you die of Dysentery. Its not "zombie" tainted.
If you die after drinking tainted water and turn, there are 2 possibilities: you got wounded by a zombie and is already turning, or you use everyone is infected setting.

Summary of the story: I drank water from a pan in a kitchen, I felt sick, then I was a nervous wreck, something wasn't right, I lost the ability to carry any more weight, I felt sleepy, even sleeping didn't help, and then I died inside a riverside restaurant.

I even thought about playing again with the same save, but I realized it would be hard to survive with 10 days left before the electricity runs out.

Yes, I only have 10 hours of gameplay.

eventually it won't matter if you start with instant water/electric shut off.
It is not that bad.

once the 10's stack up upon 10's and into the hundreds it gets easier.

Have fun!
It's very, very common for all players starting out to be confused about what killed them because that information isn't communicated directly. The most logical and obvious thing is to conclude whatever happened IMMEDIATELY prior to death is the culprit. This is not always the case however. Some causes of death are fast. Some are slow. For example if you were bit / scratched / lacerated by a zombie long before drinking the water and dying, the water was actually not what killed you. It was the injury from the zombie.

The other most common explanation for mystery events is broken mods. However since you say you've only been playing for a bit I'll guess you haven't gotten into those yet. When you do (and in all likelihood you will because mods are great!) just keep in mind a lot of them break, and when they do their intended function may not have anything to do with the break. People will say the fact it's raining zombie clowns has nothing to do with that sus firearms mod they're running, but it does.

I mean, drinking tainted water does kill you. What matters is what happens after. If your corpse doesn't reanimate then it's fine. If it does reanimate, then you have either scenario I mentioned.
