But I find the best loot is the clothes. Pile up all the zombies in one spot when doing a horde clear and you should have more than enough materials do get to Max Tailoring and have plenty of stuff left over for repairing and padding
gotta get that thread for tailoring exp! or even just making basic patches to keep your clothes warm in winter. It's extra important if you're in, say, the CDDA challenge.
Do note, if you see a zombie with intact looking clothes, consider using blunt to kill it, i think that's less likeyl to damage the clothing further.
You can usually see if a zombie has a weapon or backpack on it while it's alive as it'll be sticking out/worn. You can also loot their watches, which is useful for electronics exp and extra circuits...which is itself not particularly useful past like level 1-3 without mods, aside from a renewable generator repair supply.
Beyond that, there's rarely anything on them unless you've got greatly reduced loot or are basing FAR from towns and don't have a car, and even then, expect to search through hundreds to thousands of zombies to get anything good like a renewable amunition supply.
I've spent an in-game week just piling zombies onto a campfire, checking all the bodies, then burning them after clearing out the Hospital in LV
