Build 42? Dismantle car wrecks, barricade/unbarricade windows repeatedly, build metal floors, do that until you can craft Scrap Metal cleaver/chopper/sword, those give like 180xp per craft. First 4 levels are a pain, the rest are easy. Dismantling car wrecks during first few levels really pay off in the level 4 to 10, because then you'll have lots of materials to craft with, from the dismantled wrecks.

If you got dismantling XP turned on, then there are places, like the warehouses west from Muldraugh that have hundreds of metal barrels to dismantle (30xp per barrel)

For me, levels 1-4 were slow and painful, 5-10 took like just under an hour, by just crafting scrap weapons.
Lately I've just been getting my first few levels by making metal floors with small metal sheets. It's quick and easy, you can turn a metal sheet into 3 small ones, and I think you can do about 5 floors with 1 full torch. Now that propane tanks from backyard grills have been fixed, propane is plentiful again.

Dismantling cars is more useful for getting metal mats than it is for getting xp anyway. It takes a full torch and it takes time. In that same time you could plop down 5 floors and have more xp for the same amount of propane.

In sandbox options you can adjust specifically the Welding xp multiplier (or any other skill) if you like but dismantling cars isn't included in the "no dismantling xp" setting. Even with it ON you still get xp for cars.

Stores and libraries suck now, better drive around the map and look for zombies with backpacks/dufflebags/satchels, those usually have like 10 skillbooks/recipes. Same with survivor homes (barricaded homes). Seems to be the B42 meta for good loot: survivor zombies.
