It's such a well-established mechanic, if they wanteD to change it, at least they should mention it. The mechanic doesn't make real life sense, for sure, but it's the only point of plumbing.
I've been testing this myself, but haven't encountered the problem myself. I'm not sure if it has to be rain water specifically or what, but pouring tainted water into the barrels doesn't seem to cause the sinks to suddenly become tainted.
If anybody else finds the problem and is playing a modded game, rather than find and remove the culprit there is a "plumbing expanded" mod that solves the problem. And to side-mention it's also significantly cooler than the existing vanilla plumbing, in that when you plumb a sink it has a visual pipe running up and down, and allows you to connect multiple floors and a few other bits and bobs. Worth a look.
but for realism it should be tainted....
It is heads or tails between each update. They flip the coin and whichever lands they go with that decision;)
