mods may help with the clanky vibes you feel
If you cannot handle the JUMP SCARE, for B41 there is a mod that removes the sound of the Jumpscare. Just search for "Remove Jump Scare" in the workshop.
About the HUD, just play a little bit with it and you will understand. It is not that hard. Above you have the Inventory and the storage you might be close.
On the left side you have the actions, build, pick up, forage, etc...
Below you have the quick bar, you can attach your weapons or tools there. If you have a holster, you will also have a place to add your gun.
What part of the UI are you struggling with?
Zomboid has an insane amount of items especially in b42 so it is going to take some time to understand what is actually worth taking at a glance. One tip though is if you are not in a "safe" area zoom the camera in close so you can hear the audio cues for better situational awareness.
Being a new player the most important things are food/drink/bandages or rags along with something to smack zombies with and probably a hammer and screwdriver.
Just wait until you die, and re-roll a new character only to discover your last character coming at you as a zombo. Thats some depresso stuff
Well, a good habit to make then would be to make sure the area you want to loot is cleared first. Make sure you understand how the inventory system works though. The right window shows all the containers & ground items in your vicinity, the currently selected area being highlighted.
