How to cut down trees better?
Is there a mod or chainsaw or secret to cutting them down quicker / easier?

so far i've made stone axes and it takes like 1 1/2 to cut down 1 tree if lucky.

I wanna use them to make farms and water collectors for when the water and food eventually run out right?

Watch out for logs on the ground (they appear as part of the scenery). There are single and double logs (these show as two small white trunks sticking out of the ground) which you can just rclick and select "remove object". The are extremely plentiful so you dont tend to need to chop many trees down.

If you want wood to be a non issue then get the combine harvester mod and just trundle through a patch of woodland. All the logs will be stored in the back after you cut the trees down. Bit cheaty but its effective :)

perfect can do

also just wanna clear trees in the forest to make a base

i know logs appear hence asking to clear them easier?
Crude Stone Axes have a very low average condition when you are Axe 0 and Maintenance 0. As you level up those skills they last longer. Instead of taking two axes to chop down one tree, you'll have one crude axe last multiple trees. If you want to jumpstart, think of taking traits that start you off with Axe and Maintenance skills. Personally, I like DIY Expert and Brawler.

Once you get your knapping or masonry up to make the Large Stone Axes, or metalworking to get Axes, its no longer a problem.
If you are still crafting the Crude Stone Axe, consider switching to the Large Stone Axe.

It does require that your survivor has leveled Carving to 3, Knapping to 4 (or Masonry to 6), and Maintenance to 1. If you are playing a "neo-paleolithic" save, then your survivor should be getting the relevant skills improved on the regular, anyway.
Chopping trees is rarely necessary. All you need from a tree can usually be found on the ground. The only thing I haven't found yet are saplings, but branches, logs and twigs are abundant in wooded areas (doesn't even have to be a full forest, a treeline between houses usually has it too).

But if you double up your wood hunt with Foraging (Search Mode, the magnifying glass icon), you can find saplings too, and find much more of the other stuff, even at Level 0. It is one of the fastest skills to level, even without skillbooks.

If you need to chop trees to clear a path or an area, then you'd also have time to explore a bit around and find something better, like a wood axe or a fireman's axe. Those last long enough even on lower levels, that you usually have time to sharpen the blade and repair/replace the handle before it breaks and can be maintained quite easily without having to spend in-game days collecting materials and levelling skills.

I do wish the Crude Stone Axe was a little bit more durable at lower levels, because I like the idea of a "survivalist" or "make all tools yourself" sort of run, but as it is, that is not feasible at all on single player.
You can also try sticking to cutting down small trees and bushes. I'm not sure if you goal is planks, logs, or carving materials but any tree with a "_2" suffix in the name will auto drop a log and sapling and a single crude axe can take down like 4 or 5 of them. Bushes are easy to take out and drop tree branches. You can also go for the "_3" trees for a guaranteed 2 log drop.

Just stay away from anything labeled "jumbo". They will take multiple crude axes to take down.

If folks are at the point where they want/need these older, large diameter trees, and they have not advanced their stone-age crafting skills to be able to produce the Large Stone Axe (assuming that modern loot isn't available) OR they aren't yet able to craft their own metal axes, I do feel that they should focus on leveling the relevant skills for a few days to a full week.

The Crude Stone Axe is really a make-do tool, something to craft in a pinch or as a way to improve our foraging, knapping and carving skills, until we've either advanced our skill levels to craft the better axes or RNGeebus smiles on us and we find a modern axe somewhere.
Yea don't bother using Crude Stone Axe on big trees.

Large Stone Axe is what you want for these.

At least in B42 you need Knapping level 4 and a Magazine or Wilderness Survival trait to make Large Stone Axe heads from Flat stones (or auto learn them when reaching Knapping level 7)

Then assemble the Stone Axe Head + Binder + Large Handle

https://pzwiki.net/wiki/Large_Stone_Axe

It can chop down quite a bit of trees before it breaks. Unlike the Crude Stone Axe

Someone recently blew-up their B42 Unstable save using that mod; if anyone is trying to play B42 Unstable like it's default, stable version, they should keep their mod count down or simply not rely on mods that can dump hundreds or thousands of loose objects into a chunk in a short amount of time.
