Building onto a pre-built house/structure
Ok so I've done some research and everything I have found is like 3yrs old. Just starting to get into building off a current farm house in the game that I always use but, wanting to give it more room. I have attached a new section to the house. My question is, if I break down the walls from the premade home that lead into the new section I built will it automatically be zoned to the house or will be there be issues, such as my new section could be designated as outside. Should of looked into this before building but now I'm worried that I wrecked the house by building off it. I do have few mods currently on the go as well, so not entirely vanilla. Thanks for any assistance in advance.

It SHOULD be okay, but buildings can be a little wonky at times. Best thing to do is pop into debug mode and check to make sure there are no walls that didnt connect correctly and what not. Just double check everything went smooth.

in my experience, every side extension counts as "outside", everything that is built on top of the building is marked as "inside". the attachment requires an external power supply.
i can't say for sure whether this is also the case in b42.

Thanks guys, yeah still on b41 atm, was hoping just attaching another section it would count for the house. Would be nice in the future they allow modifications to prefab buildings and any attach sections do count to the whole, rather be independent. Cheers

yes, it's a bit tricky. on the higher floors of apartment buildings, for example, you can extend existing rooms laterally - the extension is then virtually on the balcony above the apartment below. but these rooms also need external power. on the ground floor of detached houses, for example, this doesn't work.
also frustrated me a lot the first time I tried it.

follow up question here, so if I stay inside the premade structures zone (build inside) currently power and water are still operating, if i remove walls within, or take exterior walls down to replace/repaint, will everything still work should i put in new sinks, and switches? I do have the mod where you can move the switches around and or add them. Just thinking if I can just build within the confined area and it'll all work afterwards that would be good.

I finished my addition and can see what you guys mean, sink isn't working and the room acts as a separate entity to the whole. So if I want running water and or power ill have to add those to the roof :(

-update-
so I moved my toaster to the new section to clear room, but just noticed it actually works in the new built area, would that mean the zone is powered?

-update 2-
think I've figured it out now, i hope, i moved in a microwave to a section off from the main wall i replaced, seems like anything close to that wall can be powered, but the microwave i placed across the room isn't powered.

you can rebuild everything inside the building or move furniture / appliances elsewhere. you can also destroy / replace / modify external walls.
you may also be able to add rooms from the 1st floor upwards without it being marked as "outside". the extension needs a generator. everything that is changed inside the existing building is connected to the normal power grid.
e.g. sinks can be moved in the original building, but then have to be plumbed again with a pipe wrench.
sinks only work in new rooms if you build rain barrels over them. appliances in new rooms work with a generator. but you have no "ceiling light" there, only table and floor lamps. light switches do not work in self-built rooms or bases.

when remodeling, you should take into account that all sinks need a water source (rain barrel) above them as soon as the water is turned off.
as soon as the electricity fails, everything in the building must be operated with a generator. i think it has a radius of 20 tiles around it.

Thanks Mikaze, thats a load of info I needed, cheers. So for sinks, if I add one then it needs to be plumbed, if i relocate it from its original location then it needs to be plumbed. Am I able to pick it up and put it back down without it needing plumbed?

Yeah I gave myself 1-5 years of power/water, so should be good for a bit hehehe. But its good to know. Ill be starting to build up stuff for when that happens.. Thanks again.

-update- so anything in the house when power and water is still activate, if i move the sink, i get a plumbing option and it auto does it, just tried another sink in the existing house and its plumbed and working yay lol.

i think my longest run was 8, 9 months, then i started a new game.
a year in pz is quite long under certain circumstances.

you're welcome!
