start new game. (creates a new save folder, you can look up where zomboid saves are on the internet) exit game. go to the save folder, open old save folder, find the file he mentioned, copy it. open new save folder, paste the file you copied, into that folder. start game and play the new save.
is that how?
It was time consuming, tho.
Yup. You can carry over your skills and the complete inventory of your character.
Theoretically you can take take your base with you also, just figure out which mapfile was updatet recently. I personally not recommend this because it may cause some strange behavior.
But i can confirm the skills are all there.
I really don't like that items in the game are not static and are somehow randomly defined causing the issues of missing stuff.
Another way to improve your skills mod:

Welcome to the "apocaylip"
It will happens again, some fixes unfortunately makes previous savegames corrupted. Its normal in game development when its unstable. Don't forget we are being "used" as debug testers ;) B42 is unstable and they advertise it as such, so its your call.
Why dont you just load the game in debug mode (-debug in the load parameters) and add your stuff back? Its not that hard, I just did it. At least important stuff that are more difficult to get such as generators, weapons or books. Anyway, that's what I have been doing.
The word "unstable" is very clear. This version is not yet finished, it was your own decision to use this version. Go for build 41 and enjoy the game. Plus, as there are many more mods to create your individual experience.
I play many Beta games and they have a robust error correction routine because they actually like the gamers who play their game. Saves always work even in world adjustments in a correctly coded game.
Indeed, we're years out from B41 and B42 is still in a total disaster state. But hey, they labeled it "unstable" so that somehow absolves them of all responsibility.
