How do you butcher rabbits?

Found a fresh dead rabbit and a kitchen knife however in the butchering menu i can only use birds, frogs and rodents. Any help?

Leave the dead rabbit on the ground and RMB to see the option

nope, only get the option to grab it

Have you tried picking it up and right clicking from inventory? I remember having done that to some small rodent but can't remember which

that i have, had a kitchen kife in my main inventory and equipped as primary

Make sure the knife isn't favorited and isn't equipped. Could be the cause.

I also haven't been able to butcher those simply called "Dead Rabbit" found in containers, I play vanilla exclusively so it's not a mod problem. I guess they're a leftover item from the previous build seeing how the ones you can butcher state their gender and breed etc.

i found 2 in a house on a table, one had already been butchered and there was a knife laying next to them so i assumed it would be straight forward

Sometimes you have to have a surface to butcher the animal, so right click the rabbit when you are standing next to a counter or box. You also have to have a knife or a meat cleaver in your inventory (or on the counter).
