Vehicles Offroad
Vehicles driving offroad seems to have changed in Build 42. In my experience so far, cars can no longer maintain even a low speed while driving on grass or dirt, and instead gradually lose speed until they're barely moving. I'm able to continue moving by reversing slightly, then building forward momentum again, however my speed will slowly drop again until i'm barely moving.

I've also noticed it's practically impossible to tow vehicles with even 1 or 2 tires touching grass, which can make it difficult to push or otherwise clear vehicles from the road. I've made sure i'm using an appropriate vehicle, such as a truck or van. It wouldn't make sense for the sports car/corvette to be able to tow something offroad, but even using a truck or van it's still quite a struggle. I've also made sure the vehicle doing the towing is in good condition and has good tires.

I'm personally not a fan of ArmA 2 syndrome in games, where once a car touches dirt it can barely get over 15-30mph. Was this change intentional or is it a bug? If it was intentional i hope that the dev's will reconsider it. Even a regular sedan can most certainly go over 20mph on grass or dirt, let alone a truck. Now if the vehicle was very loaded down with a lot of heavy cargo, even that would make sense and i could understand it bogging down off road. Or if you were trying to drive through a dense patch of forest, where there could be meta (You can't see them) branches and mud on the forest floor slowing you down, it could make sense. But a regular unloaded car in good condition with good tires struggling to drive on grass doesn't make much sense to me.

Also worth mentioning i'm running a completely vanilla Build 42 install with no mods what so ever. I do understand Build 42 is unstable so it very well could be a bug, but i'm just curious if this was an intentional design choice by the dev's or not.

its accurate - you need 4wd - those vehicles do exist - most of your offroad terrain is farmland - that soil is not compact at all

I can see how rough farmland could do that under the right circumstances but i'm even talking about just driving on maintained grass within towns at the start of the game, not even several weeks or months in where everything is overgrown

Yeah it’s a little jank. If you’ve ever towed something that’s on wheels IRL, it doesn’t take much to pull it…..

Obviously I can see them simulating the grassy and dirt areas but still….unless it’s a mud bog or going up a steep hill, a car can tow another car fairly easily.

This was my thought process as well. It seems way more difficult to tow something offroad or even just drive unencumbered offroad, than it should be.

Also to the previous posters comment who mentioned 4 wheel drive. Do the pickup trucks and/or vans not have 4 wheel drive? Outside of the 4 door SUV i don't know of any other vehicles in the game that would even have that, and it makes no sense why a pickup truck would not have 4 wheel drive and only that 1 SUV would.

I think it is a fair trade since the vans have such a huge capacity, i just use different vehicles depending on what I plan on doing.

I agree it's a fair trade, but i think it could work better if you have the reduced offroad performance if the vehicle is loaded with a lot of cargo. If it's empty and i'm not really utilizing any of that capacity then there shouldn't be a reduction to offroad performance i would think.

Because to reach higher speed, the vehicle switching to higher gear which is less efficient.
Try ro set lower speed like 10 mph (shift w).
Also, the engine power and combined mass matters.
I think in general they need to fine-tune the different terrain types. There are some roads that look like the car would go faster on them but dont if memory serves me correctly. Like gravel roads. Once you get momentum going its hard to stop on those and you'll be sliding around like in rally racing.

Did you maybe unknowingly ran into a bush? Because running over a bush will do that even in b41.

I've been living in the secluded house/villa east/southeast of Rosewood and the dirt track there doesn't give me any issues regardless of the vehicle. Could also be wheel and engine condition tbh. I've only been using survivor cars after all.

What makes it even weirder is that you can still reverse at a better speed. Its what I resort to on some farm driveways. I wasn't towing obviously.

No i definitely didn't run into a bush, this has been happening on completely clear level grass.

I've noticed this too, and it's what has helped me with reversing then going forward to build momentum. Reverse offroad is faster than driving forwards, it makes no sense.

reverse offroading is faster because you stay in the single gear for reversing which doesn't seem to be affected by whatever logic is going on to slow you down when forward. When you are slow off road, notice how your gear is either in 2 or even 3.

Prove this by coming to full stop then accelerate. You will move for a moment in time as fast as you do going reverse until you gradually slow down

Odd, ngl. I recall driving over a curb did slow down your vehicle ever so slightly back in b41, but not to that extent.

Where were you trying to drive on?

That in itself will keep me away from Build 42

I'll try using cruise control to stay in a single gear/consistent speed, thank you for the tips.

Just regular flat grass or dirt, it's been the same with both of those, however driving on dirt is slightly better than driving on grass for me.
