B42 Normal spawn rate for all items - my experience
There is just so much now that it seems even rarer to find stuff even on normal. I honestly wonder if setting it to normal makes it more difficult to find really rare items like a sledgehammer or wood axe now. I also have yet to find a knapping book. I don't even know how one gains experience in that skill given the only thing I can craft at skill 0 is some flint shard or something like that, but I have found 0 flint. Every other schematic requires knapping 3 or 4 that I have found.

So far, I have searched for the construction crew event that spawns on roads (the one with a sledgehammer on the ground or in the truck) In Echo Creek, Riverwood, Rosewood, Ekron, Irvington, and Muldragh.

Failing to find the sledgehammer that way I have gone to these locations and looted them looking for one:

Rosewood Fire Dept

Irvington Hardware store (the big one, had everything but a wood axe or sledgehammer)

Riverside Hardware store (same as Irvington)

3 survivor homes

Mad Dan's Den, or whatever that is called (it had a huge tool section, but no sledge or axe)

The industrial Area SW of Muldragh (every building, moving every box to ensure I searched them all, but it seems only one building here now has general tool stuff, and the rest are filled with steel ingots, saw blades, and steel rods)

The Farmer's Market Gun store West of Doe Valley

The Gun store and Camping store on the side of the road north of Mad Dan's Den

Close to giving up after almost 20 hours of clearing places to search. Next stops are McCoy Logging, and drive around March Ridge after finding a annotated map for a small shed that said "left tools here". I am familiar with the shed, it is tiny, but maybe.

I know they spawn, I have seem some streamers find one right outside their spawn home in the construction crew event. I just feel that it should be maybe a bit more likely on normal given that I searched what is probably the largest hardware store and didn't find one. That is like 40-50 shelves of just tools if not more and neither a sledgehammer or wood axe to be found. That place though, had like probably 10-15 of everything else, as far as tools.

This is my 3rd character in B42 so far. First two were on the basic Apocalypse settings, so I wasn't surprised they didn't find one, but on normal there isn't one in all those locations? Is that just terrible luck or is it somehow bugged and less likely to find one on normal loot settings?

I never found one, but after 18 hours i also stopped playing.:)

The closest i might have had a chance to find one was with a Benkman Building Van:D
Sadly it had a trunk bug. As in you open it and the trunk icon does not appear.
You can close it and open it just not check :D

Is there anything specific that only sledgehammers can do now? Because back in b41, at least, you can work around the lack of one with something else.

But yeah, in general, default loot distribution in b42 kinda sucks IMO. Just kinda funny that paperbacks and regular books are the most common loot now, as they spawn nearly in every type of container.

Looking for tools in a shed? Too bad, here's a book for you. And no, it's not even a skill book. Kek.

I started a default apocalypse Rosewood game and started in one of the two large houses in the woods in the south east. The second one had a sledgehammer in the garage. It's all RNG, but I do feel the loot's worst on default apocalypse in B42. It's compounded by more junk items and too many skills/recipes to find IMO.

'How to use generators' is the biggest pain to me. Since there's so many new magazines, the chance of the container spawning the one you actually need is lesser now. I looted pretty much every house in Echo Creek on one character without finding a single one.
Of course, it's still in the hands of rngesus, so on another character I found one pretty much immediately. I think that's the main issue here, too many new items reducing the likelihood of the game spawning the ones you actually need. When it comes down to something as essential as knowing how to plug in generators, it can be a serious pain in the neck. That's why I usually do electrician builds now. :)

Good news, you just need electrical 3 to use a generator now. Grind out those tv/lamps/range hoods/treadmill dismantles along with every other electronic item. But you know, the biggest issue was all the missing furniture, not all the now missing electronics. lol.

I believe the scarce loot is a bug

Ok, so update. I found one. On road next to construction crew event in March Ridge. So I only had to search the streets of every starting town, and like 3 others to find 1 sledgehammer.

Although this was after clearing the entire lumber mill, and Muldragh warehouse. Moving every crate around to search even the ones in the back rows.

There were 11 McCoy Lumber Mill vehicles at the mill. None of which had a wood axe. Apparently they only use fire axes to cut trees there now. I have yet to find a wood axe in the game at all. I think there are even three variations now, or maybe two, and three sledge hammer variants, but so far... only 1 sledgehammer.

I have found more m16s than both sledgehammers and wood axes combined. And probably 5 how to use generators mags, including the two in my starting home...

Its not a bug , apocalypse is to simulate that people in the world that lived there before our character spawned in took items of neccesity.

You can find axes in mccoys work vans
Sledge hammers in work trucks, vehicle stories, and buildings being constructed like near brandenburg.

Generator magazines can be found in electrical work vans and mccoys

Skillbooks are found in places with similar tools, riverside has skillbooks in the warehouses with the tools. Farming, fishing camping places have those books.

Scrap weapon recipes /skillbooksare found on survivor zombies which are very easy to find in hoards

B42 loot is still being tinkered with, especially the new maps and basements

I didn't say it was a bug. I was implying that on Normal when set in sandbox for all items, it is too rare for wood axe (which wasn't in any of the lumber vehicles or the warehouses at the lumber mill) and a sledge hammer. Or even any of the hardware stores I have been to.

So I am just saying that on normal, not rare, but normal loot, there should be at least one, if not dozens of wood axes at a lumber mill. Instead of fire axes. There were dozens of them for sure, but not a single wood axe.

And for the sledgehammer, you should reliably find one if not more in a hardware store. On normal loot settings.

Skill books also to a lesser extent are more rare also, just due to how many more new ones there are. For example you could reliably go to Rosewood school to find almost all of them before, and only need like 4 or 5 more, but now, even on normal, you find only 4 or 5 book cases of like 5 or 6. So like less than probably a 10th of all books there now. Way less books in total than before because the stress books are on way more shelves now.

I did find the best way to find a lot of books and magazines without a horde of zombies is the mail vans. Also mail facilities have tons of books. They are less of a problem though even with the increase number of them. It is just way to crazy rare to find sledgehammers, and I wonder now if wood axes haven't been removed or something.

They should make loot even rarer
Everyone knows during a realistic zombie apocalypse people would grab everything they can and turn it into dust before turning into zombies

Found a flier to reach a lumberjack factory.
Found an old axe inside in rotten condition.

Learned wood carving, it's bugged and well bugged. Head condition back to 100% after reassembly with new handle.

This is unstable... new buttlenecks because new perks and new loot.
Good luck to PZ team for found a balance. :deadrat:

First we had the issue of every Jackanapes in Louisville hurling all the sledgehammers into the damn Ohio river, but I guess now the remaining specters of America's past have doubled down and decided not even claw hammers are safe now.

I feel like I am going crazy, I turned the entirety of Muldraugh upside down and found neither a normal hammer or a sledge. I've got a couple of ballpeen hammers and wooden mallets, but I can't get my hands on a single claw hammer?

I've even checked the trunks of every vehicle I could get into at the moment and am frustrated by the idea that I have to move to the next city for one damn tool. I'm glad basements are a thing so I can have another empty room in every household.

Unless the loot stuff gets shifted, I am probably going to buckle and bump my rarity up to Normal because this is just insanity.
