Project Zomboid
Died building a staircase in 42
I survived the first month pretty good, set up shop in the garage/gas station in the new area.

I wanted to build a staircase to get to the roof so I could set up some water collection, but the roof is 2 high in that garage. It is already somewhat tricky with the logs because I can't hold 12 logs which is understandable but the _ground_ can't hold 12 either. It is capped out at 50kg.

By spreading the logs around enough to spread the load but still be available, I managed to build the first floor of the staircase. However, building that second floor was impossible because there is simply nowhere to put the logs. However, in trying to fiddle the logs into a position I could reach, my guy fell off the stairs twice while carrying logs and is now dead. I think jumping off stairs should require an explicit action because in reality you don't accidently jump off the stairs just because the camera angle doesn't make it clear when that would happen.

Needless to say I'm taking a long break from build 42.

Also: you can't actually move/deconstruct or even destroy a staircase you've built so if it turns out it is not in the perfect position on the first go, tough luck.

Another sidenote: there is a metal rack on the counters in the shop of the gas station which I can't move/destroy/pick up/... It just floats there forever which is annoying.

People Literally fall off of high places while doing construction work all the time. You failing to be careful doesn't mean there should be an explicit button you need to press to fall off the edge.

Camera angle be damned, You can see exactly where your feet are and what tile you're standing on, If you leave that tile into a tile that does not contain a floor, or a staircase, you fall. It's that simple.

As for the 12 logs thing, You should be able to build with what is in your inventory + what is on the ground combined, rather than having to put it all in one or the other. Also in backpack on your character counts, unless that changed in b42.

Edit: To the floating rack, b42 has a set of debug reporting tools enabled. Right click report tile bug, so it can hopefully be fixed or modified to not be an issue.

bro is literally the "ummm acshually" emoji lmao

Yeah, but... You're not walking on a beam. You're walking on a whole ass square meter of floor in game. Doing the same IRL, You shouldn't be falling off the edge like a nonce. If you do, It's your overconfidence for picking up a log you clearly can't keep balanced- Ergo, Your incorrect inputs. You made a dumb decision to try and walk across a narrow span where there is a risk of a fall while carrying something you cannot handle.

In game it's even worse- No matter what you carry it does not impact your inputs whatsoever, There is no 'balancing' a log on your shoulder and overbalancing to one side, There's no wind, there's no slipping hazards like grease or ice or water, So if you walk off the ledge like an idiot, You literally did it to yourself.

No, i do think op has a point and your realism scenario kinda misses the plank here, two different arguments.

Videogame, not a torture device.
Have you seen the rest of the game? :spiffo:

All it takes is one injury from the main omni-present antagonist group to potentially end your run. One. One tiny mistake, One slipup, One momentary lapse in judgement; Go directly to drink bleach, Make new character.

Starvation is a brutal and constant threat, even a single zombie can end you let alone how a group can corner you or drag you down, Weapons shatter yet more enemies come, Ammo runs dry, yet more enemies come. New players spend their first dozen or so hours never surviving the first day. Even old hats sometimes can't survive a month. There is no cure. And more besides.

It is brutal. And it is purposefully so, through and through.

The motto of the game is literally "This is how you died", The game you are playing is literally already over before you started, You're 'playing' the events that lead to your character's death.

:conwayheadscratch: Sounds like a torture device to me. One we willingly subject ourselves to in a weird sense of quasi-masochistic non-sexual enjoyment, Sure. But still a torture device.

So, Being able to fall off the edge of something you're building when you press the wrong buttons while near said edge? Fits right in.

Starting off your bibles worth of text with an insinuation of 'are you new' really is not going to make me want to read the rest bud.
Have a good one lmao.

More of a joking statement phrased as a question tbh. You're speaking as if the game is not as ballbustingly difficult as it clearly is and is clearly meant to be, How can I expect you to be anything but someone that hasn't really played the game yet? PZ is a torture chamber we willingly step into. And you're trying to state that it's not.

Like, It'd be similar to someone going into a racing game forum and being like "It's not supposed to be a competition!" and, No. It's a racing game, You're vying for first place. It's a competition. The only rational assumption at that point is that the player hasn't even launched the game yet to see you're competing for first place; Or that they're a troll. Rather than assuming you're a troll, I leaned jokingly towards the former. :conwayshrug:

Now I'm going to treat you like a troll though, Because you dismissed the remainder of my message off a joke at the start and don't actually have a rebuttal. Have a nice day, I guess.
Realism is a weak argument because:

- in real life the floor does not have an arbitrary weight limit
- in real life you don't have to gather all the materials for a building project in a single spot before you can build it, you can build in stages and take weeks bringing in the actual materials
- the game already prevents you from stepping off the staircase midway, it is only at the top that such accidents can occur
- needless to say but real life is first person 3D

I would love to see building a ghost image that slowly gets filled in as you bring in the materials but I assume that is a massive refactor so not really achievable.

I think the easiest fix is to allow you to pull materials from a slightly broader radius.

Beyond that, I assume it would be trivial to add another checkbox to the sandbox settings (only there for people like me) that require an explicit action (right click menu, button press, whatever) to jump down from a high place.
Ah. Death by stairs. Haven't seen that in a while.
